My chihuahua makes wheezing noises when she whines. Is this serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 9 years old | 6 lbs

Hi, so my chihuahua Ginger has been making some odd wheezing noises. Its silent when shes breathing, you can still hear it though, but when she whines you can hear her wheezing loudly. Like for example, when she cries for us to pet her. She always has a normal crying sound, but all day today she’s been making a wheezing noise and its concerning me. It sounds like she lost her voice or cant breathe. Thanks for your help.

I'd have Ginger checked out by a vet for this problem. It could be she has a respiratory infection or she could have heart disease causing this wheezing. It could also be she is suffering from a condition called a collapsing trachea. This needs to be checked out by a vet so she can be treated as needed. Best of luck.

Hi, wheezing can be secondary to several conditions such as infection, asthma etc. I would recommend to have her checked over to understand what is causing it and how to help her feel better. Hope this helps !
