My 12-year-old Shih Tzu is wheezing, sneezing, and vomiting. Advice?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 12 years and 2 months old | 11 lbs

I have a Shitzu who is 12 years. She is in good shape but has had the normal red eyes etc that I give her drops for. She developed an ear infection last month which has cleared up. This week she has been sneezing and wheezing when walking her and also has gaged and vomited a little. I give her 1/2 tab clariton for allergies. Anything else I can do or give her? She just was at Vet for ear and was cleared. She is 11 lbs.

Thank you for your question regarding Chloe. I am happy to hear that her ear has cleared up and it’s not causing her any more problems.

In regards to her wheezing, sneezing, gagging and vomiting, dogs her age can acquire these symptoms through a variety of diseases such as environmental or seasonal allergies, upper respiratory disease, sinus problems, dental problems, etc.

I understand that you were just at the veterinarian and you may be hesitant about taking her back. But I strongly encourage you to schedule another physical examination as soon as possible to make sure that she does not have one of the above mentioned diseases and to make sure that the Claritin is adequate enough treatment.

I'm sorry to hear Lala is having issues. There can be multiple causes for wheezing in dogs, including heart disease, a collapsing trachea, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, or another underlying issue. If she does not seem in distress, you can monitor her to see if it is persistent. If she is having trouble breathing or you are concerned, I would have her evaluated by a veterinarian right away. Otherwise I would touch base with her regular veterinarian to discuss what may be going on and if she needs an exam or X-rays to get to the bottom of it. Good luck!

My Shih Tzu is sneezing and has a stuffy nose. Should I see a vet?

Bentley is very cute! I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian for a good physical exam. I would be concerned with an older patient that maybe his teeth are causing inflammation in the nasal passage or even an upper respiratory infection. In older pets a vet visit is always best. [Allergies](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/canine-allergies/) can stimulate the release of histamines which can increase gastric acid production the stomach which may explain the vomiting. If she is lethargic, anorexic, or shaking, I would bring her in for a physical exam. You can discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets and antihistamine use with your veterinarian during the exam.

I'm glad to hear that Sassy seems to be doing better; do I understand that correctly? It is possible that she may have been having some gastritis or an upset stomach that caused the vomiting; and perhaps some gastric reflux. If they regurgitate and the stomach contents come up to the back of the throat from reflux, that could potentially lead to some reverse sneezing and irritation in the throat. In a more serious scenario, aspiration can occur (the stomach contents from vomit or regurgitation go down into the airways) which could lead to pneumonia. You can ask your vet if an acid reducer for her stomach may be warranted, but other than that, as long as she's doing well I don't think you need to worry.
