Yes, all medications can have side effects and can be ineffective or even dangerous if given in the wrong situations. Your vet will likely want to run a urine test to rule out complications such as diabetes, infection, inflammation or even bladder tumours which could be triggering the reduced bladder control and if all is clear they can then prescribe medication to help reduce the leaking if it is simple incontinence

The most likely fluid in a spayed female dog would be urine. When a dog dribbles urine or leaves spots of urine on the bedding I often think about urinary tract infections. Older dogs can also develop urinary sphyncter incompetence (or a weak sphyncter), making it difficult for them to hold their bladder overnight. There are also less common causes, for instance bladder stones or endocrine diseases. Your veterinarian will likely offer to run a urinalysis, a urine culture, and maybe some bloodwork on Sassy to determine what might be causing the urine leaking. There are antibiotics we use for urinary tract infections and if it appears to be loss of bladder control there are medications to help with that as well. Hi there. PPA (phenylpropanolamine, or Proin) is a very common first-line choice for urinary incontinence in female dogs, and often works well in my experience. So it's likely that this could be a good option for Sofi, depending on whether she has any other underlying health issues to consider. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a prescription over the internet, as legally this has to be done by a veterinarian who has physically examined your pet. So I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinarian in your area to bring Sofi in for an exam. He/she can discuss medication options for urinary incontinence with you, and should be able to provide a prescription for whatever medication the two of you decide to try.

The sores are likely from urine scalding. You need to wash the area that gets wet with urine with sudsy warm water, rinse it well and dry it well. Put vaseline everywhere where the urine would get on the skin. This will protect the skin. Ask your veterinarian whether Phenylpropanolamine will be a suitable medication for your dog's incontinence problem. The leaking can be caused by a UTI or by a lack of female hormones, or also old age bladder sphincter weakness. Your vet will give her a thorough exam and hopefully find the cause of the incontinence.

By medications, I am assuming you mean medications for incontinence. There are several medications available to treat this problem, and some patients will respond to a different type than the one they are currently on. You may also be able to increase the dose of the current medication, or give it more frequently. If Katie has not been evaluated for other possible urinary issues with your vet, it may be a good idea. She may have been misdiagnosed as urinary incontinent when in fact she may have urinary bladder stones, kidney disease, UTI, or a congenital defect causing urine to leak (like an ectopic ureter). If by medications you were not referring to those for incontinence, then she may be urinating frequently as a side effect of those medications. Incontinence medications may help with this issue. With either scenario, I would recommend that Katie see a vet for evaluation and possible medication adjustment.

IF she is urinating and not knowing she is going, then she likely has incontinence. Pets will also often have pooling of urine if they are incontinent, which is typically on the bed or anywhere that they lay. Fortunately, there is medication that your vet can prescribe for Brandi to help with her incontinence once the trial of antibiotics are complete. Its best to place a doggy diaper on her until then.
