My pug has watery stool for 2 days. What's the cause and what to do?

Hi there. My first thought is that Pavi needs checked for internal parasites like coccidia that will change the color of their stool and cause then to strain. Second, feeding a good quality food for digestive health is key if your pup often has an upset tummy. Purina Pro Plan EN is a good one, or Hills Science Diet GI. Both are available in canned and dry foods. Some dogs do best when this is what they are fed exclusively. Another thing would be to have Pavi's anal glands checked so that this is not giving her any pain. Hope this helps!

Max may have chronic diarrhea related to several issues including GI parasites, food sensitivities, or internal medical issues like inflammatory bowel disease. I'd recommend having him examined by your veterinarian and having a stool sample checked out. It would also be a good idea to try a higher quality food like Royal Canin Sensitive stomach. You can also feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice for a couple days to see if this helps. Often times a good sensitivity will develop later in life so Max may need a diet change to resolve the issue. I am so sorry to hear Maximus is not doing well. You have not indicated how Maximus is feeling otherwise, this information can determine what steps need to be taken. If Maximus is acting normal, eating and drinking and not vomiting then I would recommend feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and see how he does over the next 24 hours. If Maximus is NOT acting normally, or is not eating, or has had some vomiting, or you notice blood in the diarrrhea then you need to take him to your vet for an exam and treatment. They may recommend some diagnostics such as a fecal exam and bloodwork. If Maximus is dehydrated your vet May recommend fluid therapy (either into the vein or under the skin) and will likely prescribe some medications as well (such as anti nausea meds, antibiotics and peobiotics) I hope Maximus feels better soon!

Poor Frank! This vomiting and diarrhea could be caused by a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. Lethargy would be an accompaniment of being this ill, while his back legs could be sore from having to squat so frequently to have diarrhea. I would try a home remedy first, but if he still has the same symptoms in the morning, I would take him into the vet for an exam. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If his symptoms worsen in the night, I would take him into an ER vet right away.

Poor Max. This bloated belly could be due to intestinal worms. He needs a deworming treatment, and he needs to see a vet now. Please take him into one immediately, and the vet can give the deworming treatment. Best of luck.

Overheating is always a concern in pugs as you mentioned, due to her being brachycephalic (the cute smushy faced dogs!). It is important in the hot summer months to limit their time outside in the heat and keep a cool area for them to be comfortable inside. She should also have free access to water during the day. If she is a little overweight, starting her on a diet food may also help, as the extra weight could be affecting her as well. For softer stools, adding in some extra fiber (such as pumpkin puree) may be beneficial. If the softer stools are persistent, you see any blood or she starts to act ill, I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian. Good luck!

Poor Maximus! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including giardia, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even something more sinister like Addison's Disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normla food can be done. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. I hope Maximus starts feeling better quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions!
