Does my dog's water bowl always need to be right next to his food?

This is always true for dogs as it is hard to know when exactly they will feel the need of drinking water but it is especially true for puppies as they are a bit harder to predict. Dogs like humans rely on thirst and usually will drink when thirsty so I would not worry about this too much. If he eats a wet food, that may be another reason why he does not drink as much water. I also assume that the age you put on here is incorrect since it says that Louis is already 1 years old. A puppy is considered to be under 1 year. You can simply place water from the faucet into a regular dog bowl and offer it to him. He should drink readily and know what to do from there. If he doesn't seem interested at first, you can place a few drops on your finger and offer it to his lips for him to lick off. Do this a few times and he should begin to drink on his own. You can also give him canned puppy food in the beginning, just in case he doesn't drink an adequate amount of water initially, and this can help supplement his water intake. I hope this helps! As long as they get along, there is no reason that you need to have multiple necessarily. If you start to note that they are competing or one is getting significantly more food than the other, adding a second bowl would be in their best interest. Hope this makes sense.

I can't get over how handsome Buddy is, and his playpen looks lovely! I would have him eat in another area of the home. Pick an area where you are going to feed him as an adult, and start feeding him there. That way, he learns that specific area is for food. My dogs each have a specific spot where they eat, and they know when it's meal time to go to that spot for food. It's better to keep his food area away from his potty area. I wouldn't want to eat where I go to the bathroom either! :-)

It maybe the dog bowl is bigger or the edge of the bowl is different. I’d try a different water bowl for him to find one he likes better.
