Is it normal for my dog to wake up and poop during the night?

It could be that Bruno is still full from dinner the night before, leading him to not want to eat all of his breakfast. It could also be that you are giving him too much food in the morning and night, causing him to eat less in the morning. Given that he is eating consistently, seems normal, has energy, and poops normally, I would not be too concerned about this. Try giving him a bit less in the morning to see if he eats it all. The circling and whining may be indicating she needs to go outside to eliminate. I recommend getting her seen by your vet to make sure there isn't some underlying medical condition that is causing her to suddenly need to relieve herself so early in the morning. If she is an older dog, she may simply be unable to hold it as long as she used to, but it's best to check her out at your vets to be safe. You might consider feeding her two meals a day, one at breakfast time and another late afternoon or evening. Make sure she goes outside right before bedtime and give her plenty of time to relieve herself. Dogs can be like people and do better when they are on a structured schedule with food.

Crating actually helps with separation anxiety, as it gives a dog a safe place of their own. I wouldn't feel terrible for putting Duke in there, as it can be a fun place for a dog to be in, and it helps them feel secure. That being said, him pooping two nights in a row could actually be due to a medical illness as opposed to separation anxiety. He could be suffering from diarrhea, which would make him have to poop immediately. I would take him into the vet in the morning for an exam. Diarrhea in dogs can be caused by intestinal parasites, GI illness, a sudden change in diet. or a foreign body. The vet can diagnose if he does have a medical illness causing the pooping in the night, and can treat accordingly.

Some dogs have their own schedules and they are pretty stubborn about it! You could try going on a long walk 30 minutes after eating, sometimes that will stimulate the bowels. But otherwise, he probably just needs some more time to adjust. Make sure when you take him out in the middle of the night, that it is "boring" for Walter. Let him out, then take him back to bed. No talking or playing or treats.

Poor Bruno! It’s possible it’s related to the deworming but it’s also possible there’s another cause such as a viral infection, dietary indiscretion, parasites or bacteria over growth. Usually a reaction to an oral medication will happen within 24 hours. Since Bruno is young and small, I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian today if possible. Small breed puppies are susceptible to low blood sugar and this will cause seizures and can be fatal if not treated. If puppies don’t eat, they run the risk of developing low blood sugar. He is not feeling well and that’s why he’s not eating. It’s always best to be safe with these little ones. Offer him cooked chicken breast and plain boiled white rice. Canned puppy food would also be a good option. If he shows any signs of significant lethargy, trouble walking or seizures, smear something sugary like Karo syrup on his gums and get to the vet’s office immediately. Unfortunately, many products now have xylitol in them to act as a sweetener and this is toxic to dogs so you want to read your labels. I hope he starts feeling better quickly! While it is normal for a puppy to potty several times throughout the night until they gain control of their bladder muscles, it is unusual to be pooping 4 times a night.
