Why is my dog sick after puppies, refusing food, and throwing up?

It could be a sign of uterine infection, remnants of dead fetus within the uterus or mastitis. It still could be gastroenteritis, which is unrelated to the pregnancy and having puppies but I think it is less likely. You should take Sally to your local vets today, as there may be something serious going on. Another concern is that if she is not eating and drinking but feeding the puppies she will get dehydrated very quickly.

Poor Princess! She could be pregnant but she could also have something else going on like parasites, eating something she shouldn’t, a bacterial infection or even a viral infection. You can try to offer her some plain chicken (no bones) and white rice to see if you can entice her to eat. If she doesn’t perk up soon, I would have your vet take a look at her. I worry she is going to get dehydrated. Your vet will be able do a fecal, blood work and even X-rays if needed. Your vet will be able to assess her hydration and give her fluids if needed. Your vet will be able to get her started on some meds that are safe for puppies in case she is pregnant to help make her feel better. I hope this helps!

I am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues with Gretal. There are many conditions which can affect the recently postpartum female dog including exhaustion, infection, trauma, hypoglycaemia, severe blood loss causing anemia, and mastitis. Watch for collapse, lethargy, pale gums, dry gums, vomiting, diarrhoea, Loss of blood, complete loss of appetite or the signs of mastitis. Mastitis is a bacterial infection of one, or sometimes more then one, of the milk producing glands in the breasts. Other clinical signs would be; Swelling Firm Warm Discharge (other then milk) painful to the touch Loss of appetite Lethargy Neglect of puppies If you notice any of the above clinical signs, or suspect that Gretal could have mastitis, based on the above clinical signs I would suggest that you take her to see a veterinarian. The vet will be able to prescribe an antibiotics antiinflamatory medications and pain relief. In the meantime you can apply a cool compress to the affected area. Do not attempt any over the counter medications or ointments as they may cause pain or delay healing. It is fine for Gretal to eat only wet food as this will rehydrate her. Low sodium broth should be used. Try a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and steamed white rice. The broth that the chicken is cooked with can be added to her food for extra hydration. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am very worried that Fury might have another puppy or placenta stuck inside her that is causing infection. Ideally I strongly recommend you find a friend or someone that can help transport you to a vet clinic, as she might need surgery to save her. She might also need antibiotics. Try feeding her a high quality puppy food that is canned- this will provide her with the energy, calcium and more water that she needs, and feed her as much as she will eat. If there are clinics in your area that aren't free, I recommend bringing her and surrendering her to those clinics, as she sounds like she is seriously ill and might be in pain. Poor Babygirl! I see that she isn't spayed. One of the causes of her symptoms could be a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus. This is fatal without treatment. It could also be she has a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or pancreatitis. Because she hasn't eaten in two days, is vomiting, and I can't rule out a pyometra without seeing her in person, I would take her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Unfortunately, all the signs you have listed are considered "non-specific" meaning these are common signs associated with many different diseases. The most life-threatening and urgent case would be if a puppy was not delivered and has been dead inside her. This can lead to signs life this followed by shock and death. As such, if you are not sure how many puppies she was carrying (via a previous x-ray), I'd see an emergency vet immediately to confirm that all of them are out. If not, emergency stabilization and/or surgery will be needed. Several other things coming to mind include: mastitis (mammary tissue infection/inflammation), bacterial or viral infection, parasites, intestinal obstruction (if she is known to eat things), and more. Regardless of what the underlying cause it, Sam is losing alot of her body fluid through milk and will quickly become seriously dehydrated if she is not drinking. She needs to see a vet today to make sure she is ok and to re-hydrate her if necessary. Best of luck to you and Sam.

No, it isn't normal for a dog to behave like this after mating. It could be that the mating didn't take, and she could now be suffering from an infection of the uterus called a pyometra. A pyo is life threatening, and requires immediate medical attention. I would take Brinleigh into a vet now for an exam. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and x-rays to determine if she does have a pyometra. If she does have one, the recommended treatment is to spay her and treat her with antibiotics. Please take her into a vet now.
