My miniature poodle ate too much wet food and vomited. Bloat concern?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Minka is experiencing a simple food bloat (stomach is big and full of food). I recommend NOT feeding her until tomorrow, only small sips of water and walk her every 2-4 hours until bedtime. If she starts non-productively retching, appears restless or painful, pacing, won't lie down then she should go to the closest emergency room. If none of those things happen then she should be fine. If he stomach looks normal size tomorrow morning then resume her normal feeding schedule with her normal food. Good luck!

If she hasn't vomited again and doesn't seem uncomfortable, you can try giving a 1/4 portion of food or even boiled chicken and rice to see how she handles it, and then gradually increase back to her normal meals. If she seems in distress and is very painful or bloated, or is trying to vomit/pass stool and can't, or begins to vomit a lot after eating, I would bring her into your vet right away for care.

Very rare in small breed dogs. - while eating and drinking large amounts of water can pre-dispose, it is only one factor of many. I don’t know if there is research about the timing but in my experience in emergency practice it’s usually within an hour of eating/drinking. - dogs with bloat will vomit (or attempt to vomit) REPEATEDLY and will stand uncomfortably or pace - they will not sleep or rest comfortably Keeping all the above in mind, if Maple is sleeping happily, you have nothing to worry about! Get some rest! PS- since Maple is female, talk to your vet about doing a prophylactic (preventative) gastropexy during her spay if you are choosing to spay. If you are not spaying Maple, some places can do the gastropexy laparoscopically to avoid the big incision. I hope this helps! As long as Harley is comfortable and does not show signs of weakness, panting, discomfort you can monitor him at home. However, if his abdomen becomes very bloated and your puppy becomes weak and subdued, you should take him to your local vets as an emergency. Dogs which are fed large meals once daily are at higher risk of developing GDV, so it will be better if Harley gets fed smaller meals twice a day.

I'd without food for tonight, and keep a close eye on him. If you see pacing, anxiety, restlessness, trying to vomit but can't, and excessive drooling, take him into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, feed him his normal breakfast in the morning. I hope this helps!

I would offer her the normal amount of food in tiny amounts over the next day or two. As in divide her daily ration into six feedings. Allow her plenty of water, and you can even add water to the food. If it is food bloat, she should feel better tomorrow. If she isn’t interested in food tonight or she tries retching or vomiting, she needs to see a vet ASAP.

The description of heavy breathing, retching, and contracting abdomen sound like the symptoms of a gastric dilatation/volvulus, or bloat. This happens when the stomach is filled with air and can even twist on itself and is more common in large breed dogs. The condition is extremely uncomfortable, and requires immediate stabilization and possibly surgery. This can be life-threatening and requires immediate veterinary care, especially if there is torsion. I recommend getting your dog to the vet as soon as possible. There are 24-hour emergency clinics in most cities that are open overnight and will be able to stabilize your dog.
