My dog ate a lot of human food and is bloated. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 19 lbs

My 4 year old Boston terrier has mild/borderline kidney disease sinde she was 2 years old. She's on special food for this and isn't supposed to eat table food. While we were out, she ate almost an entire box of Belvita breakfast biscuits and some uncooked regular (not instant) basmati rice. She looks like she's very full. Should I just monitor her and avoid giving her dinner? She seems to be urinating more frequently as she had an accident in the house. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

It sounds like Minka is experiencing a simple food bloat (stomach is big and full of food). I recommend NOT feeding her until tomorrow, only small sips of water and walk her every 2-4 hours until bedtime. If she starts non-productively retching, appears restless or painful, pacing, won't lie down then she should go to the closest emergency room. If none of those things happen then she should be fine. If he stomach looks normal size tomorrow morning then resume her normal feeding schedule with her normal food.

Good luck!
