My dog is vomiting and has diarrhea after deworming. Is this normal?

Hi,t hanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dewowmers have the potential to cause an upset stomach such as vomit, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

As long as she is not lethargic then this is fine to monitor for at least 24 to 48 hours. If there is no improvement or the symptoms worsen then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. GENERAL INFORMATION A bland diet is a diet that is soft and highly digestible. It is low in fiber, fat and protein and is high in carbohydrates. Bland diets are generally composed of a single carbohydrate source and a single lean protein source. The most common bland diet is boiled rice and boiled lean chicken breast, without skin and bones. Since bland diets are low in fiber, stool production slows and defecation is less frequent. Bland diets are fed to rest the gastric system and to help promote normal stool formation. Animals that are physically sick should not be fed bland diets as a method of treatment. PRIOR TO FEEDING A BLAND DIET Pets should be fasted for 12 to 24 hours. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. BASIC BOILED RICE AND CHICKEN BLAND DIET RECIPE CARBOHYDRATE SOURCE: Boiled white rice LEAN PROTEIN SOURCE: Chicken breast, no skin and bones BOILED RICE: 1 part white rice with 3 parts water boiled for 20 – 25 minutes or until the rice is easily crushed. BOILED CHICKEN: De-fat chicken breast and boil in water for 10 – 15 minutes or until the chicken meat is easily pulled apart and cooked all way through. MIXING INSTRUCTIONS: Finely chop the lean protein and mix 2 cups carbohydrate source and ½ cup lean protein source. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Bland diets can be premade and stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of 48 hours. The bland diet can be cooked in a batch and frozen in feeding sized portions to minimize preparation time. Thaw and warm the frozen diet prior to feeding. PERMITTED LEAN PROTEIN SUBSTITUTIONS Pork loin, egg whites, low fat cottage cheese. 7% low fat hamburger, plain low fat yogurt. PERMITTED CARBOHYDRATE SUBSTITUTIONS Boiled potatoes, boiled spaghetti, Minute rice. PERMITTED COMMERCIAL BLAND DIETS Science Prescription Diet I/D, Eukanuba Veterinary Diet Low Residue, Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Intestinal HE. FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS Estimate 25% of your animal’s diet and feed that amount of the bland diet every 6 – 8 hours. Smaller animals will require less and larger animals will require more adhering to the same carbohydrate to lean protein source ratio. The bland diet should be fed for 4 -5 days with no treats or other food sources until stools are firm. TRANSITION BACK TO A NORMAL DIET Never transition back to a regular diet rapidly. Transition back to the regular diet over a 1 week period. Start by adding 25% of the regular diet to 75% of the bland diet and feed that combination for 2 days. If stools continue to be firm then continue substituting the regular diet in 25% increments and feeding the combination in 2 day time intervals until the diet is 100% regular diet. Minimize treats for 1 week after moving the diet back to 100% regular diet.

I always recommend the first time giving nexgard and heartgard to separate them out by 2 days in case there is a reaction we know which drug it could be. Both have the potential to cause an upset stomach. Also having intestinal parasites can cause vomiting and diarrhea. The heatgard kills round worms so that could be why Lucy passed the worm after you gave the medication. Sadly both are possible causes for her upset stomach. Usually all quickly resolve. Just watch her closely for the next several hours. If she continues to vomit or won't eat this morning I would call your Vet when they open this morning and have her seen before they close for the weekend. Good luck!

Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and then every 2-3 weeks. This should be done multiple times and should continue for 3-4 times after weaning. When puppies nurse, they continue to get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother. Good luck

The stool could look this way more from the stress of the veterinary visit, than from the Heartgard. It can take approximately 8 hours from the time a substance is swallowed to the time it is passed back out, so I very much doubt that the medication caused this. Now, if Max had vomited within 30 minutes or so of swallowing the Heartgard, then I would say this is the probable cause. So, as long as he is eating & drinking regular, & his stool does not get looser, then he will be perfectly fine.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Daisy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Razor! Intestinal parasites are very common causes of diarrhea. The tapeworm medications are only specific for tapeworm while most 7-8 week old puppies also have roundworms. Also at almost 8 weeks old Razor should be starting his vaccinations. Parvo is a virus that causes diarrhea and can be life threatening. I would have Razor examined by your Vet and bring a stool sample to be tested for other intestinal parasites. He should be dewormed with a broad spectrum drug that gets more than just tapeworms. Other causes of diarrhea in puppies are: intestinal parasites like roundworms, whip and hook worm, coccidia, and giardia, food allergy/intolerance, dietary indiscretion, viral or bacterial infections and other intestinal diseases. Tapeworms are contracted from fleas so be sure that Razor doesn't have fleas and is on a good flea and tick medication. I hope this helps and I wish you and Razor the very best!
