My dog has diarrhea after Heartgard and vet visit. Is it normal?

Her condition is not normal, and I would recommend following-up with your veterinarian this morning as soon as they open for a reassessment appointment. She may need some labs ran to ensure nothing major is wrong internally which is something for you to discuss with your vet. At a minimum, it is likely she will need anti-nausea medication as well as some medications to help with the diarrhea. If left untreated, she could become very dehydrated which would make her extremely sick. It is much better to get on top of these things before they become a bigger problem. Depending on the stage of infection, it can take several days for all of the adult worms to die and be passed in the feces. It is normal to see different types of worms in the feces, as this product kills several types of worms, which are very common in puppies. If you notice that your puppy is continuing to have diarrhea after several days, I recommend bringing a stool sample from Blaze to your vet to determine which parasites are present. Diarrhea can be normal after Immiticide injections, especially if he is also currently on steroids (often used concurrently to reduce inflammation and chances of embolisms). You should worry if you see signs of coughing, extreme lethargy, pale gums, not eating, or any random bleeding episodes. Other than that a little loose stool is not very concerning for a severe reaction. You can try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese tonight to help settle the stomach. If the diarrhea continues past 12-24 hrs then antibiotics +/- probiotics may be prescribed by your vet to help get the intestinal flora back to normal status.

It is safe to give it to him, but I would also have him seen by your vet first if possible. Heartgard rarely will cause an upset stomach but since he has had diarrhea on and off for 2 weeks I am more worried that he is becoming dehydrated. Your vet will be able to do a fecal and see if he has any parasites. Be sure they rule out giardia as well. They will be able to get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. I always recommend the first time giving nexgard and heartgard to separate them out by 2 days in case there is a reaction we know which drug it could be. Both have the potential to cause an upset stomach. Also having intestinal parasites can cause vomiting and diarrhea. The heatgard kills round worms so that could be why Lucy passed the worm after you gave the medication. Sadly both are possible causes for her upset stomach. Usually all quickly resolve. Just watch her closely for the next several hours. If she continues to vomit or won't eat this morning I would call your Vet when they open this morning and have her seen before they close for the weekend. Good luck!

I wouldn't be worried yet. Give her a day to get reset after the stress of going to the vet clinic. If she's still out of sorts tomorrow evening, give your vet a call to set up an appointment. Many dogs get mild diarrhea when stressed (such as after being boarded, having lots of family in town, or simple vet visits). If Harley is otherwise ill (not eating, lethargic, bloody diarrhea, vomiting), then I'd recommend getting her back to the vet tomorrow, or even an ER clinic tonight if she's getting worse quickly.
