My dog is vomiting and chasing tail 5 days after spay. Is it serious?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. I do recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. Her incision appears to be healing well. I do not see redness, swelling or discharge draining out. However, pictures can be deceiving. I am more worried that she is not eating. The diarrhea needs to be addressed as well. The veterinarian will examine her and take her temperature. A fever, for example, can indicate an infection. If you stopped her medications, which is reasonable given the diarrhea, she may be very painful now though. This too can affect appetite. The veterinarian will guide you on any testing or treatment options. In the meantime, keep her quiet, encourage her to drink so she doesn't become dehydrated and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. The wound looks quite healthy but there is a small amount of not completely clear discharge coming out from it. I cannot see any skin sutures as well. I would recommend an immediate check up to determine if skin sutures were removed accidentally (by licking it). Antibiotics (local) may be needed. The vomiting is very unlikely to be related to the surgeries and could perhaps be related to any post-operative medications that she is on (if that applies) or perhaps something unrelated. If she is on any medications, check with your veterinarian to see if these can be discontinued. Otherwise, have her evaluated by your veterinarian to check for any other possible causes like gastroenteritis. At the very least they can start her on anti-nausea medications. It can be normal to vomit once or twice in the 24 hours following anesthesia but I wouldn't expect Sadie to be experiencing side effects from anesthesia at this point. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her if the vomiting and decreased appetite continue: it may or may not be related to her recent surgery. If she is on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medication like carprofen or meloxicam it would be best to discontinue the medication since these can sometimes cause stomach upset - your vet can prescribe a different pain medication if necessary.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lena needs to have an examination by a veterinarian as soon as you can to ensure the incision remains closed. In the picture, it appears there is some inflammation next to the incision. This is likely due to irritation to the area, and she may be licking at the incision and making the inflammation worst. If she is licking it, it could even cause infection or make an existing infection worse. I would recommend an Elizabethan collar to be fitted on Lena to make sure she is not able to lick the area until fully healed. The lack of appetite is very concerning which makes her case in more urgent need of attention by a veterinarian. It may be nothing serious yet, but it is better to get on top of these things early to keep them from becoming a larger issue. Hope this helps and that Lena gets better!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If she was bright and happy, and is now lethargic again, one concern is an infection within the abdomen. This is rare after a spay but can happen as a potential complication of any abdominal surgery. I recommend you have Molly back to your vet ASAP, or to an emergency clinic if your vet is closed. They will check her abdomen with an ultrasound to see if any free fluid is present, and will test this fluid if present. They might also do a blood test to look at her white and red blood cell levels. It might just be that Molly needs more pain medications, however we must rule out a 'peritonitis' (infection in the abdominal cavity) first. Best of luck with Molly, I hope she feels better soon!

I'm so sorry Laney is so sick! Unfortunately a pyometra is an extremely serious infection and it does make a dog very sick. Sometimes even with surgical and medical treatment, the dog is so sick that it cannot survive, but I certainly hope that isn't the case with Laney! You are doing the right thing by taking her back into the vet for more treatment, and it may be a good idea to have her hospitalized with the vet. If she is with the vet full time, she can have constant monitoring and they may be able to try medications that stimulate her appetite. I can tell you are fighting for her, and I would speak with your vet to see if they feel hospitalizing her is the best option. Give her lots of love as well, which I'm sure you are doing. I'd give the vet a call now. Again, I'm sorry she is so sick!
