My dog is vomiting and pooping blood. Is diet related to pancreatitis?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

If Pixi is being treated for pancreatitis, this vomiting could still be related to it. Pancreatitis makes a dog very sick. I think she needs to see a vet immediately, as she sounds very sick. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

I am so sorry to hear this but glad you could get Manchitas the appropriate medical attention! A small amount of fresh blood could still normal at this point. The most important thing is how she seems to feel- returning energy, interest in food, water and moving around on her own are all good signs! As long as she is tolerating the medicine well, I would continue it. I would also closely watch her appetite and energy. Keep her food simple, either special food if they gave it to you or boiled chicken with cooked white rice! I hope this helps and she feels better soon!

That does sound concerning. It is possible that she is having another flare up of her previous ulcers. Other causes for diarrhea and vomiting with blood in it include Addison's disease, intestinal parasites, tick-borne diseases, IMHA, IBD, intestinal cancer, among many others. I would recommend that Gubbu get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. After physical examination and a review of her medical history, the vet may recommend bloodwork to check for anemia and other relevant things. They may also recommend an abdominal ultrasound, which will help use get a picture of what her digestive tract is doing and looks like.

Aw poor Jacky Gill! I'm very concerned about the blood in the vomit as this can indicate serve Gastrointestinal inflammation or ulcer formation. Jacky should see a veterinarian right away as he likely needs prescription medication to stop the vomiting and diarrhea. He may need fluids to help rehydrate him. It may also be a good idea to have X-rays done to ensure there is no intestinal blockage. Once he has received medical care a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice may also help him recover. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. It can be caused secondary to any type of inflammation in the stomach or possible high fat diet. IF Olive ate cat poop than started vomiting. It is possible the vomiting cause pancreatitis but the poop just caused gastric upset. Pancreatitis can be mild where patient recovers fast or can be really severe where patient needs hospitalized. I have not personally seen a case of pancreatitis due to mold. However if the mold caused vomiting or diarrhea it is possible. It can affect the white blood cells in the body. Typically the wbc do increase with this disease because of inflammation. hope that helps

Vomiting blood is serious. The GI upset could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn't have, bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia), poison, a bleeding disorder, pancreatitis, cancer or intestinal blockage. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today. Try to remember to take in a stool sample. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth and other diagnostics may be recommended as well. She needs the correct diagnosis in order to receive appropriate care.
