Why is my dog throwing up blood and not eating for several days?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 65 lbs

My German Shepard named Shelby has recently turned 1, is throwing up clear mucus like puke and has not ate in about 5 days. But one time she threw up some blood with clear vomit. But she is constantly drinking water and I have tried different ways to feed her. I did get her to eat one bone treat but she will not eat her dry food, wet food or even puppy chow. Is this a serious condition?

Poor Shelby! Such chronic vomiting with lack ignorance appetite is definitely cause for concern. This may be caused by a stomach ulcer, foreign body, or parasites. I recommend having Shelby seen by a vet right away to determine what is going on and provide the appropriate treatment, which may include fluids, antibiotics, and hospitalization. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. She needs to be seen by her veterinarian or an emergency doctor this evening. She is so small that she will easily become dehydrated. The blood in the vomit is concerning. It can be due to the irritation of frequent vomiting or it could indicate a more serious problem such as a stomach ulcer, pancreatitis, a severe infection or a condition known as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. She may need some diagnostic testing and likely some supportive care such as anti-nausea medication, drugs to protect her stomach from bleeding and fluids to rehydrate her. Poor Shelby! I would have her seen by a vet immediately. It's quite serious that there is blood in her vomit, and that could be caused by a trauma to the GI tract from all the vomiting. The vomiting could be caused by eating something rotten, GI illness, a foreign body, intestinal worms, or pancreatitis. The vet can diagnose what is causing her vomiting and can treat her for it. Please take her into a vet now.

I'm sorry to hear that Dakota is sick! Poor girl! I'm very concerned that she has vomited a blood clot and is having a hard time eating and urinating. Dakota needs to see a veterinarian right away to have these issues addressed. A blood clot in the vomit can indicate a severe GI ulcer or toxin exposure and subsequent bleeding. If she is unable to urinate she may have a severe UTI, bladder stone, or kidney infection. All of the above conditions require veterinary medical care. My dog is lethargic, vomiting blood, and won't eat. What can I do?

Loss of appetite and vomiting can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Layka evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can offer a bland diet which may help. This diet could be composed of rice, boiled chicken, ham, turkey, lean hamburgers or low fat cottage cheese. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Blood in the vomit is definitely cause for concern, as it can indicate stomach ulcers, stomach parasites, or even a foreign body. As puppies are prone to getting into things they shouldn't, Simba may have ingested a toxin such as human pain medication or a piece of a toy. It is concerning that Simba did not feel well after vomiting. I recommend having him seen by a vet as vomiting blood can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Your vet can perform bloodwork and x-rays to rule out the conditions above.

My dog threw up blood. What causes it and when should I see a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Blood in the vomit indicates most commonly stomach lining irritation or ulceration. The only way heat could cause this is if Doggy is experiencing heat stroke (high body temperature, collapse, etc). When a dog is having heat stroke it is obvious and life threatening. Just general hot weather shouldn't cause vomiting let alone with blood. Causes of vomiting are: viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, he ate something inappropriate, pancreatitis, a blockage from eating a foreign object that is stuck, toxin ingestion, clotting or platelet problem or from something local to Lebanon. If he continues to vomit with blood that is an emergency and he should be seen by a Vet. If he is lethargic and won't eat currently he should see a Vet. Otherwise I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken breast with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days to rest his stomach. i wish you the best!

Why is my dog drooling, vomiting, shaking, not eating, and depressed?

These could be symptoms of a toxicity (e.g. if Shelby recently ate something toxic to dogs like raisins, chocolate, sugar free gum, antifreeze, aspirin); liver or kidney disease (both of which can cause nausea/vomiting); pancreatitis (vomiting/diarrhea due to an inflamed pancreas from eating table food), possibly a foreign body obstruction or other causes. All of these possibilities are potentially life threatening and the safest option is to take Shelby to a veterinary ER as soon as possible for bloodwork, radiographs and treatment as indicated based on the physical exam. Why is my dog vomiting blood and grass? Should I be worried?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Bobo is sick! Bloody flecks usually indicates that the stomach lining is ulcerated. It can be from all the common reasons for vomiting: ate something gross, food sensitivity, viral or bacterial infection, pancreatitis, toxins, metabolic isssues or drug reaction. Try fasting her for 12-24 hrs then feed as "sip and nibble" of water and bland diet. Try boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. About 3/4 cup per day. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once you start feeding you should take her to the Vet. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Poor Lily. Vomiting streaks of blood is a medical emergency ,and she could have a foreign body, damage to her stomach or esophagus, GI ulcers, or may have eaten something toxic. You need to take her into a vet immediately.
