If my dog has a UTI, is a fever always a symptom I should expect?

General tests to consider include bloodwork (CBC and chemistry panel), urinalysis, thoracic radiographs and ideally abdominal ultrasound. This would be a good place to start to see if the cause can be found. An infection is possible though other things like inflammatory diseases or cancer can also cause a fever. While dogs often have a fever with blastomycosis, not all dogs do. It's also possible for the fever to come and go. Hopefully you are waiting on some testing for blastomycosis that should give a definitive answer - if not ask your veterinarian about testing a urine sample.

I think in a case like this the first thing to consider is what is causing the clinical findings. In an older Golden retriever with such a high fever, I would be very concerned about underlying causes that can cause fevers such as for example an upper urinary tract infection such as pyelonephritis which can explain both the fever and the high renal values or possibly cancer. I think further diagnostics that can be pursued include abdominal ultrasound and urine culture and susceptibility. If there is any concern for lymphoma (due to for example the presence of peripheral lymphadenopathy), I would recommend checking an ionized calcium secondary to lymphoma for example as that could explain the increased renal values and potentially the fever. A CBC would also be helpful to try to see if there is an immature neutrophilia for example that could further support an infectious disease though this can also occur due to cancer to some extent. Thorough fluid therapy is important though again, diagnostics to try to pinpoint the cause of the fever would be crucial. If you are unable to proceed with diagnostics and physical examination does not point out any other possible causes, I would consider using broad-spectrum antibiotics such as enrofloxacin and Clavamox. The area does look a bit red, but it's hard to tell from a picture if there is an issue or not. Diagnosing a UTI would require a urine sample, and I would need to be able to see her in person to diagnose if there is an infection. I'm also not sure if she is showing symptoms like frequent urination, urinating in small amounts, drinking lots of water, trying to go to the bathroom frequently, accidents in the home, or lethargy (these are all signs of a UTI). An infection may be presented with symptoms such as a discharge. If she is showing any of the signs I mentioned, then she needs to see a vet. Just a little redness could be normal, and if she has no symptoms or abnormal behavior, then I suspect she is fine. I hope this helps!

Yes, it could be possible a dog has a fluctuating fever while on antibiotics. Fevers can be caused by viruses as well as bacteria, and antibiotics do not treat viruses, thus leading to the continued presence of a fever. If you are concerned about her, I'd have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

We see sterile inflammation of the bladder in cats that people sometimes incorrectly term a UTI, but this is not seen in dogs. A true urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection. Parvo virus does not cause residual problems in the body once the dog gets rid of the infection. The diet you mentioned appears nutritionally incomplete which can certainly cause a number of problems, but I would not expect it to worsen a UTI. A UTI needs to be diagnosed based on lab results and the resolution of the UTI also needs to be confirmed with lab results. If the first round of antibiotics does not resolve the infection, we will often perform a bacterial culture and sensitivity and possibly additional testing to further investigate the problem.
