Why is my dog underweight with loose stools and low appetite?

Causes of diarrhea can be from: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), new treats/dog food/table food, toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance. If Rosebud is fully vaccinated and has been thoroughly dewormed and has had stool samples checked then I would with hold food for 12-24 hours. Do not take away water unless vomiting. After the fast offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If she continues to not eat or starts to vomit, she needs to see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rosebud a speedy recovery!

Loose stool and lack of appetite could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please make an appointment to have Tootsie seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible for diagnostics and treatment. In the meantime, if she is not eating well, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding her small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken once it has cooled. You can also add in plain boiled white rice. I recommend taking in a fecal sample from Tootsie to your vet as well, as that may aid them in making a diagnosis. This is a horrible situation for you and Joe. Many diseases can cause diarrhoea both in the gut and outside of it from othervorgans such as the liver. It is promising that the ultrasound was unremarkable but some subtle changes may not be noted. I would suggest asking your vet to perform a full blood profile including folate and cobalamun, bile acids and endocrine profile. If nothing shows up on these bloods the next step would be endoscopy and biopsies of the gut. For example he could have an inflammatory bowel disease that will only respond to steroids, or it could be a vit B12 deficiency, so It is important to get to the bottom of this.

It seems as Rosy is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking Rosi to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Poor girl. Rosy likely has intestinal parasites in her belly, causing her to not gain weigh. Intestinal parasites can also give a bloated belly appearance. Rosy needs to have her feces tested at your local veterinarian practice or humane society and get dewormed for parasites. Even when puppies are negative, they are still dewormed regularly at this age with a broad spectrum dewormer (i.e. pyrantel palmoate). Also make sure that Rosy is on a high quality dog food that will be more filling, such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Evo, Merrick, Iams, etc.

It sounds from what you are describing that Rosy’s decreased appetite is most likely related to a mild gastrointestinal upset or behaviour issue. I would advise the following Bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice. This will be good for her gastrointestinal tract and will tempt her to eat. Do this for a few days. Low sodium chicken broth if she isn’t drinking enough If she starts to vomit, have diarrhoea,seems lethargic please post another question here and I will help you further.

Her symptoms could be due to any number of things: * intestinal parasites (worms) * endocrine disease (Cushings, thyroid, Addisons, etc) * liver, kidney or other organ failure/disease * cancer * etc...... Her symptoms sound serious and I think you need to have her examined by your veterinarian. Weeks of weight loss and diarrhea is not good. Even if the vet finds that it is just old age there are medications she can be given to help her walk better and be more comfortable.
