My dog is uncomfortable, umbilical hernia larger, and shaky. Vet?

This does sound concerning - occasionally an umbilical hernia is large enough that abdominal organs can slip through the hernia and become trapped outside of the body - most commonly intestines or spleen. This is pretty rare however. I would recommend checking in with your vet to see if they want to examine Maggie sooner and determine if surgery should be moved up. If she seems painful, if the area continues to get larger, or if she vomits or has a decrease in appetite you should see an emergency veterinarian.

It does appear that it could it be a hernia. You would need a physical exam by your veterinarian for confirmation. As long as Nala is behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. If necessary, have a family neighbor or friend take Nala to the vet. You may even be able drive up and have the technician remove her from the car. You can wait outside while the exam is done and then they can return her to you and discuss findings and any treatments.

I'm so sorry your pet is so ill. It sounds like Holly may have an infection. Bacterial infection causes pet to shake and be uncomfortable, they are also lethargic not eating and have a fever. You can certainly check her rectal temperature and if it is above 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, then an infection is likely and she needs to see a vet. I see she isn't spayed so it is very likely she has an infection of her uterus (pyometra) which can happen at any time and can be life threatening if not treated quickly. It could be that, hernias can cause intestinal blockage, i would recommend taking her to the vet in order to get it checked ASAP. even if this isn't the hernia, it will need to be repaired surgically sooner rather than later.

In the United States this is typically recommended to be done at around 6 months, but you should chat with your veterinarian and see what age they recommend scheduling Hazel for her procedure. The risk with a hernia is that intestines and other abdominal organs may become entrapped in the hernia and this can create an emergency situation. Monitor carefully for signs that the swelling is firm or painful, or if Hazel goes off her food and seems uncomfortable.

Hello. The problem with a possible hernia is if it is large enough, intestines can become trapped in the sac. The itching concerns me as, but I can not say how it may be related to a hernia. What does concern me is having a large lump of any kind in an older pet. I think this is something that should be investigated further. If your current vet does not seem to be overly concerned about this, then a second opinion at another practice would be a good idea.
