Why does my dog randomly turn blue and act like he's choking?

So sorry about your dog. Besides it being caused by a seizure disorder, he could have something like laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea or be having a syncopal (fainting) episode from a heart problem. You could try to record one so your vet can see exactly what is happening. If the episodes continue and your vet is not able to control them, ask for a referral to a specialist for more testing. It might be a good idea to take a chest x-ray, have an ultrasound of his heart, and/or examination of his throat to look for laryngeal paralysis. Hope he gets better soon!

If her gums and tongue turned blue (cyanosis aka cyanotic), this is a sign of not getting enough oxygen. This can come from a heart problem, a tracheal issue like tracheal collapse, a severe allergic reaction, poor pulmonary perfusion (pneumonia, cancer, fluid around the lungs, etc) and much more. I would strongly recommend to take her to the vet for an exam to see if they can figure out what caused her to be cyanotic and hopefully prevent it from happening again. Lack of oxygen can be fatal if not immediately treated. I hope this helps!

Oh my. Poor Brody : (. Because this was repetitive I suspect that your pet may have an underlying heart condition. Compressing his stomach may have inadvertently increased blood flow to the upper part of his body. It's hard to say for sure without examining him and listening to his heart for any murmurs or arrhythmias. Therefore I would recommend taking him in to your vet for a proper examination. He may be able to be managed with medication if he has an underlying heart condition. I hope Brody gets properly treated soon. Best of luck.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your concern about Joey! Given that he's not choking anymore and breathing easily, I wouldn't be too concerned about that. It sounds like he could be fine. What I am concerned about is the heat. Heat stoke is very deadly, and it can easily happen when it's really hot outside. Keep him indoors as much as possible, having him in the a/c or near a fan. Make sure he has a cool and dark room to rest in, and always leave out cool water for him to drink. Keep his trips outside short, just enough time for him to go potty. If you want to get him exercise, walk him very early in the morning or later in the evening when it's cooler, and do not overexert him. If you see any signs of heat stroke, which include excessive drooling, panting, increased body temperature, reddened gums, and decreased urine output, get him into a vet immediately. Your veterinarian could proceed with further diagnostics to investigate this. This may entail bloodwork, neck x-rays and abdominal imaging. Treatment would depend on findings. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Wow! How scary for you! You stated that he is a mix breed but can you specify what breeds? Some breeds are genetically predisposed to have over long soft palates, which can cause an upper airway obstruction. We may never know what caused this episode. An ischemic event is possible or a brief vestibular event or even seizure (focal) since he seemed mentally inappropriate. Watch him closely and god forbid if he has another episode try to catch it on video to show to your Vet. I wish you the best!
