My dog's TTA incision has pus. Is it infected and not weight-bearing?

Unfortunately I'd guess that this is an implant failure, and the symptoms may not resolve until the screw is removed. I'd recommend rechecking with your vet to see what they would recommend next. It's possible that a different surgical procedure will need to be performed, or your vet might want to try getting a culture of the wound and a longer course of antibiotics.

Toby is very cute! It is hard to say what is causing he swelling without seeing him but if there is pus and blood then it is likely infected. If a foreign object was under the surface of his skin it could create a swelling. The best way to know is to have a vet stick a needle into the swelling and look at the cells under the microscope. They can then recommend the next treatment and start antibiotics if infected. Good luck and kisses to Toby!

IF a drain was not placed (can't be sure from the picture), then it is likely to be pus. it's usually better to leave bite wounds at least partially open or to put a drain inside, otherwise these type of wounds tend to get infected. if you can wipe it off quite easily, it's pus and it might not heal properly, you might need to take him back to the vet today.

Poor girl. She does apear to be taking a while to heal. If pus is present, then that is the reason for the delay in healing. The infection is not being controlled well with the antibiotics chosen. Another stronger antibiotic is needed here, so discuss this with your veterinarian. I do also see some granulation tissue there which is when the skin is trying to heal and close the incision. The wound still looks pretty fresh though, even though its been 3 weeks now. Based on what I see in the photo and your description, hydrotherapy of the area may be needed at this point, possible reclosure of the area with additional staples once these are removed, and a different antibiotic. It is hard to tell from the picture - heat, redness, discharge , smell and pus would be the red flags most concerning. A small bit of swelling and blood spots is not uncommon but a post surgery recheck to monitor her temperature and signs of infection would be recommended for safety as infection could cause problems in the longterm

One of the main problems here is that your dog is licking the incision. The licking causes microscopically small injuries into which your dog licks bacteria. These bacteria cause infection and pus to form. so it is important to keep the dog from licking by preferably putting an e-collar on Kat until the incision is completely healed. If your dog keeps licking even after it is healed then you need to take Kat to your vet for a recheck as there may be pain or irritation that entices Kat to lick.

If thick brown puss is coming from a wound I would recommend bringing him to a vet as soon as possible. If it ends up being nothing major at least they can provide him pain medication to help him feel better.
