My dog is on Tramadol. Is Tralieve dosage the same or stronger?

Tramadol is an opioid meant to alleviate moderate pain, however there are research papers now that determined it is not that effective. Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (like aspirin, but for dogs) which is given for certain types of pain such as arthritis. However Carprofen is excreted via the kidneys and if it is to be used, the dog receiving it needs to have a small blood test to verify that his kidneys are working properly. Also carprofen can cause stomach ulcers in some dogs. So unless your vet prescribes these medications for your dog, please do not give them. However, should your vet prescribe those medications for your other dog, you can tell him that you have them and then be informed of the proper dosage to give.

They can be given together but I generally recommend giving the tramadol at night, if only given once a day. It is for pain only and can cause drowsiness. That way she will sleep better and be less painful in the morning. If needed tramadol can be given up to four times daily. Check the dose and frequency with your veterinarian to see what they recommend. The Galliprant is an anti inflammatory medication which reduces joint inflammation thereby reducing discomfort. I recommend giving this with a full meal in the morning so she can be active without discomfort during the day. Please make sure she doesn’t gain weight since that can also increase arthritis pain. He should be fine but all animals can have a different reaction to medications so just monitor him closely for the next 4-6 hours. Too much tramadol can cause sedation or agitation, wobbliness, disorientation, vomiting, tremors and possibly seizures. He ingested the very top end of the dosage he could have for his weight. I suspect he will just be very sleepy.

Tramadol is metabolized in the liver and its metabolites are excreted in the urine. it is unlikely the smaller dog will be harmed by any tramadol in the urine. greater concern is the drinking of the urine itself. This may lead to stomach upset. Restrict access to dog wastes and provide plenty of fresh water. If the smaller dog seems excessively thirsty, a work up with your veterinarian is recommended. Unless he or she is exhibiting discomfort associated with the hip dysplasia, pain medication is likely not indicated. A joint supplement, weight control and regular exercise would be beneficial.

You should take her to your veterinarian for a re-assessment. THis may include changing to another NSAID, or adding other pain medication such as Gabapentin, or even opioids. You may also start with some physiotherapy such as swimming in warm water, to keep her mobile. Unfortunately more and more evidence points to Tramadol not being very effective in dogs for taking pain. I suggest you make an appointment with your vet soon.

Hello. I am so sorry for your pet's diagnosis. While there is a dose of Tramadol available for dogs, we have now learned that it is not a great drug for pain relief. It is often used here as a multi-modal approach to pain using Tramadol with an NSAID & Gabapentin. With severe pain, a fentanyl patch may be required. You really need to visit with your veterinarian to make sure your pet is as pain free as possible for the rest of his life. The dose for clindamycin is within the normal dose range, and the dose for tramadol is also within the normal dose range. You can ask your vet why they upped the doses for Chewy, but they are safe. I hope this helps.
