My dog took Tramadol. Why is she not eating or losing her appetite?

That should not be a problem. The only risk is that Tramadol won't be effective. I would recommend to have Gum Gum checked if the signs (pain and inappetence) are not getting any better in the next 12-24hours.

He should be fine but all animals can have a different reaction to medications so just monitor him closely for the next 4-6 hours. Too much tramadol can cause sedation or agitation, wobbliness, disorientation, vomiting, tremors and possibly seizures. He ingested the very top end of the dosage he could have for his weight. I suspect he will just be very sleepy.

Unfortunately some dogs do seem to be disoriented from hydromorphone and similar medications. Usually dilaudid only lasts for about 6 hours, but there can be individual variation. If it does not specify that the medication needs to be given with food you could place in as far back in her mouth as you can and then hold her mouth shut until she swallows. I would expect her appetite to be normal tomorrow morning but wouldn't worry too much if she skips a meal tonight as long as she doesn't have any other health problems.

There is a large dosing range with tramadol and it is a fairly safe drug so Teddy should be fine. Teddy’s max dose would be about 80mg and he ingested much less than that. You may note that he is more sedate/sleepy than normal but that will wear off in 8-12 hours once the drug is out of his system. Sometimes Tramadol can cause inappetance and GI upset as well so watch for these symtoms too. If Teddy is showing any other abnormal signs like vomiting, diarrhea, or neurologic signs, you should take him to the veterinarian immediately. Try feeding her some sloppy soup with rice and white boiled chicken, or canned dog food. You may have to sit next to her and entice her to eat. Be patient, she will start eating . The Tramadol sometimes will not work very well, so she may be in pain.

The wound looks perfect. Sonetimes they shake because of the after egfects of aneasthetic, but strong pain killers such as tramadol can make dogs feel strange. I would suggest stopping the tramadol now and see how she gets on.

Tramadol is metabolized in the liver and its metabolites are excreted in the urine. it is unlikely the smaller dog will be harmed by any tramadol in the urine. greater concern is the drinking of the urine itself. This may lead to stomach upset. Restrict access to dog wastes and provide plenty of fresh water. If the smaller dog seems excessively thirsty, a work up with your veterinarian is recommended. Unless he or she is exhibiting discomfort associated with the hip dysplasia, pain medication is likely not indicated. A joint supplement, weight control and regular exercise would be beneficial.
