My dog tore a silica gel packet. Should I worry or go to the vet?

The silica gel packets are virtually non-toxic. They are labelled 'do not 'eat' because they aren't meant to be eaten and the dust from the processing and creation of silica is irritating to the skin, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract and can cause problems for people exposed to it on a regular basis, such as those who work making them. The beads do not enlarge in the stomach and the exterior packaging is usually soft and presents little risk of injury of obstruction.

If you are referring to the fresh packets or silica gel or activated charcoal packets that come in shoe boxes, medications, etc then they are non toxic. Ones that contain iron are toxic. So I would check to see what kind it is. Silica gel are white. Activated charcoal is black but isn't magnetic. Iron is magnetic, black and he should see a Vet if he ate the iron. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! From what I can find out about these Rapid Relief gel packs is that the contents are not to be ingested but are non-toxic. If ingested by humans or dogs there is generally no concern excepts maybe some tummy upset. It doesn't contain anti-freeze. I would confirm though with poison control to be 100% sure. It depends on what was in the packet. Some of those packets can be toxic. If it was Silica Gel she may be fine. I suggest you take Cosmo to the vet as soon as possible or call the Pet Poison Helpline for assistance. You may have to call the manufacturer of the dog treats and find out what is in the packet. The good news is that this silica gel is non-toxic, but you may see some vomiting and/or diarrhea from Kramer. If you do, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If Kramer continues to vomit and have diarrhea in the absence of food or on the bland diet, becomes very lethargic, stops drinking water, or starts vomiting water, then I would have him seen by a vet right away.

If she only ate a small piece of the wrapper, I would not be concerned as long as she did not ingest a mothball. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The chips themselves won't hurt her. It would depends on how big the pieces of the bag were that she could have swallowed. If you can barely tell if pieces of the bag are missing then I am sure she will be fine. Watch for vomit, lethargy, not eating and belly pain as signs of a blockage. I wish Zoey the best!
