Dog's tongue scratched by cat: When should I take him to the vet?

You won't be able to put anything on the tongue to treat topically. I would recommend having Melcho checked by a vet. The wound may need stitches to heal. The tongue is great at healing but the edges of the wound need to be close together to heal. Antibiotics would probably be a good idea.

Aww poor Bentley! If the blood is just from his tongue being frozen to a window and him removing it, it should heal up quickly. If it is still bleeding tomorrow and not improving I'd recommend calling your vet, as they may prescribe medication to help coat the tongue and prevent pain. In the meantime you can offer him some cold water to help keep the area clean, and since cold can help slow bleeding, this may help reduce the blood. If Bentley is having difficulty eating or drinking, call your vet, as he may be in pain.

There isn't much you can do for irritation to the tongue. Thankfully tongues heal very quickly. If Toby seems painful, then he would need prescription pain medications since human OTC pain meds are not safe in pets. If he seems ill, he may need prescription antibiotics. You can feed soft food instead of hard food to avoid further irritation. I am more concerned about the cause of the wound to his tongue. If this is from biting an electrical cord, dogs can develop much more serious wounds in the following days and weeks that can involved the gums, cheeks, teeth, and even the lungs.

Poor kitty. Do a really good check of kitties mouth and see if you can identify the source of the bleeding. If it is coming from the tongue and if it has stopped bleeding for the most part, but only starts again after kitten eats, then this may be manageable at home. Get kitty a pet friendly oral rinse from your local pet store and flush the mouth daily to keep things from getting infected. Then I would make sure that kitty eats soft canned food only to avoid friction on the tongue and hopefully keep the bleeding episodes to a minimal. The tongue heals relatively quickly in most cases (within a few days), so anything beyond that would concern me that there is potentially another source of the bleeding, at which point it may be best to have kitty seen by your vet for a thorough exam.

Oh no that is awful! The cat will have to be sedated to remove the tongue and the tongue may need stitches to close the hole. The tongue is an amazing organ and actually heals quite quickly, so I expect it would be a great prognosis. This will be extremely painful to the cat and it's serious he can't eat or drink. This is a medical emergency and he has to see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Hi, this appears to be an ulcer or some kind of wound. I would check his mouth for other ulcerated areas. If there are none, he could have licked something that burned him like a chemical or something hot. Luckily, the mouth heals very fast and there should be no treatment required. No need to rush Sheru into a vet now. I would gently clean his wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!
