Why are my dog's toes red, swollen, and causing her to limp?

Lucy could have a foreign body such as a grass seed or foxtail causing the swelling, could have broken her toes or torn a ligament, or could have an infection. Ouch! Chopper's paw looks quite inflamed and uncomfortable! Some of the more common causes of swelling between the toes are related to contact allergies, ingrown or infected hair follicles, or immune system disorders. Peroxide can be beneficial to clean out an open wound once, but can actually delay tissue healing if it is used repeatedly. In the future, I would avoid using peroxide. Due to this degree of swelling and discomfort, Chopper should be examined by his vet. I didn't see any pustules in the photos, but his vet will need to closely look for these during exam, as they can indicate the presence of infection. Chopper may also need oral or topical anti-inflammatory medications or anti-itch medications to allow his foot to heal. Repeated licking is only irritating his skin further and could lead to a skin infection (if it isn't already present). If he's limping from pain, keeping him on kennel/bed rest with leashed walks only can help reduce pressure and irritation. I'd also keep the feet as clean and dry as possible and use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to keep him from licking as continued licking can worsen irritation and any infection present.

It looks like Lillie may have a pododermatitis, or foot infection as there appears to be some redness and moisture in between her toes in the pictures. It could be secondary to trauma, but I typically see it in dogs with allergies. If she will let you soak her feet in Epsom salts for 5-10 minutes daily that may help but ultimately she may need to see a vet for treatment since oral medications are often much more effective. A food allergy could potentially cause itching and secondary redness on the feet, and it is possible that Vinnie is allergic to a protein source and not a grain. An environmental allergen like pollen or grass would be a little more common. If the redness is on his actual paw pad he could also have an immune mediated disease. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about additional tests - an allergy blood panel might be helpful, or a biopsy could rule out immune mediated disease.
