Why does my dog's toe hurt? Nail rough, skin pink. Home remedies?

Ouch! Poor Roman. It's possible he may have an infection going on in the nail bed, or an abscess (infection under the skin) or other issue going on with the toe itself. If he won't let you touch it, bringing him into your vet is best. They can safely sedate him so that the foot can be completely examined, any infection cleared out or nails trimmed back/removed, and medication given to help with pain and infection. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him resting and preventing him from licking at the foot by placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on him may help.

Hello, sorry to hear about Panda. An injury such as a sprain may simply require some rest and ice. If he has a cut then cleaning with soap and water will work. And finally, placing an e-collar on him so that he does not lick at his toes would be best case scenario as this is likely the source of infection. If he is licking at the area, he should wear a cone for approximately 3-5 days. No running, jumping, or rough housing should be allowed during his rest period of 10 days. Once he has recovered, then he may resume his normal activity. If his toe continues to be red, then you he should be seen by a veterinarian. If Panda develops any limping, then he should also be seen by his veterinarian then. Hope this helps and best of luck.

This could be a small puncture wound or abrasion your dog got outside. If he is not licking it or limping on it, just keep it clean and dry and it should heal on its own within a few days. If however it seems to be bothering your dog or persists for more than about 3 days you should probably have it checked out. I hope this helps. Poor Alex. He could have a toenail that is embedded in the skin or even an injury to his toe itself if he landed on that foot the wrong way. He needs to have this examined by your local veterinarian to determine the extent of the injury first. Once we know what's going on with the toe then we can know how to best treat it. If you can't get him in right away then you can soak the foot in warm Epson salt bath for 5 to 10 minutes to alleviate pain and inflammation. Otherwise getting him seen is the best option to control Alex's pain and treat whatever injury exists.

Yes, it's pretty clear that Louie's right fourth toe is visible longer than his other toes. Normally, the third and fourth digits are pretty comparable in length. As you mentioned, yes, it's possible that this is a tendon injury, but other issues like bony or soft tissue masses, osteomyelitis, or other injuries are certainly possible. For now, I would carefully feel the "longer" toe to see if there is any swelling (soft or firm) relative to the other toes. If there's any asymmetry between the fourth toe and the others, then it's definitely worth having Louie examined by his vet, potentially with some x-rays of this foot. However, if it feels perfectly normal, he continues walking normally, and isn't showing any other signs of discomfort or sensitivity, then yes, it's perfectly reasonable to continue conservative management and monitoring at home. Poor Rock! If he is acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking, active, not excessively painful) you can monitor him at home for the next few days to see if the problem resolves. I would recommend restricting his exercise as much as possible to give the affected paw a chance to heal - short leash walks to potty only, no running or jumping. If the paw looks red and seems sore, you can also try soaking it in warm water and Epsom salts to help with the soreness and irritation. If you are not seeing any improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if he is non-weightbearing on the affected paw or seems very painful, then I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. He/she can take x-rays if needed to help determine the problem, and can also prescribe safe and effective pain medication to make him more comfortable.

Looks like he has an inflammatory process or infection of the nail bed and surrounding skin. These problems are often painful and usually cause a lot of licking and chewing which can definitely make the problem worse. I would advise taking Remy to your vet to have this evaluated or you could try some warm Epsom Salt soaks of the toe for 10 minutes two to three times daily. Put warm water and Epsom Salts in a basin and just have him stand in the basin while keeping him occupied with petting, treats, etc. If the area improves then you should be fine. If the irritation/infection gets worse then please see your vet for the appropriate treatment. Good luck with Remy.
