My senior dog tore his toenail and won't stand on his paw. What now?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 110 lbs

My dog of 15 years of age tore his toe nail out last night. He has had a bit of difficulty of walking in the past year bit right after his toenail tore he was in alot of pain and could not walk. He seems to be okay now but he will not stand on his paw

Poor Alex. He could have a toenail that is embedded in the skin or even an injury to his toe itself if he landed on that foot the wrong way. He needs to have this examined by your local veterinarian to determine the extent of the injury first. Once we know what's going on with the toe then we can know how to best treat it. If you can't get him in right away then you can soak the foot in warm Epson salt bath for 5 to 10 minutes to alleviate pain and inflammation. Otherwise getting him seen is the best option to control Alex's pain and treat whatever injury exists.

Yes, you can take Alex into a vet immediately. It's quite serious that he cannot stand up, and he's likely in a lot of pain. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can give him safe pain relief, and can treat his torn nail.

I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian. He should get antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. If not treated appropriately these can sometimes create a bone infection, which can take a long time to clear up and be very painful for the dog.

The nail also may need to be pulled off and the paw bandaged so it stays clean and Sullivan does not lick at it.

I would call your veterinarian in the morning and if you cannot get in right away I would recommend getting a bootie from a pet store to cover the toe. I would not bandage the toe I would just place the bootie on if you cannot get to your veterinarian tomorrow.

I recommend booking an appointment with a veterinarian to have Lexie’s nail evaluated, as it is likely causing her pain, as indicated by the limping. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet. Your veterinarian can prescribe safe medication to help with the pain, and can clean and treat the injury to help reduce the risk of infection. In the meantime, I recommend putting an e-collar (cone) on Lexie to help prevent her from licking her paw an reduce the risk of infection. I hope Lexie feels better soon!

My dog's nail bent and bled. He won't let me touch his paw!

By your description, your dog may have a partially [broken nail](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/broken-nails/) which can be a bit painful. You can take him to your veterinary office and ask them to cut the nail back to promote normal growth, or you can monitor the toe and see if the nail grows out naturally. Just watch for any signs of infection (redness, swelling, discharge) in the toe. Do not allow your dog to lick or chew at it. An e-collar (cone) can be placed on him until he has healed.

My dog yelped, is slow, paw spot. Is it an emergency? What to do?

As long as Xander is behaving normally, he can likely wait until your veterinarian is available. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to say what may have happened. he could have strained a muscle, stepped on something or simply stepped awkwardly. Monitor for lameness, lethargy, excessive licking or restlessness. These are symtpoms that should be addressed by your vet. if the paw becomes swollen, very painful or has bleeding/discharge then have Xander seen at the local veternary ER. You can place an e-collar (cone) on him if he is licking. There is nothing OTC that you can safely give. If he develops lameness, restrict his activity to just leash walks for elimination until he sees the vet.

My dog's paw toe is red and raw, and the nail is white. What's wrong?

Ouch! Poor Roman. It's possible he may have an infection going on in the nail bed, or an abscess (infection under the skin) or other issue going on with the toe itself. If he won't let you touch it, bringing him into your vet is best. They can safely sedate him so that the foot can be completely examined, any infection cleared out or nails trimmed back/removed, and medication given to help with pain and infection. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him resting and preventing him from licking at the foot by placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on him may help.

My dog ripped a nail off her front paw. What should I do to help her?

If the nail is completely removed and exposing the nail bed, keep the toe as clean as possible to try to prevent infection. For my patients that have done this, I typically will place them on oral antibiotics and analgesics (pain medication) to prevent infection and keep them comfortable while the nail regrows. Some nails will not regrow normally if the nailbed was also injured. If Naria is limping on the affected paw, or the toe becomes swollen I would recommend having her seen by her veterinarian for appropriate medications to be dispensed.

My dog is limping after a run with a red paw. What should I do?

Poor Chia - yes she has pulled the hard part of her nail off and the photos show she must be painful as she is holding her foot off the ground. I expect she'll try to lick the area which can make things worse so try to prevent her doing this by putting a sock over her foot, using an e-collar or cone if you have one. For first aid you can apply/ clean the toe by soaking it in a bowl of warm water with a couple of teaspoons of salt in - which is antiseptic. You can cover her foot with a dog shoe or boot which are sold at pet stores. For pain I recommend taking her to see her vet tomorrow. Please do not give her any human pain medicines which can be toxic to dogs. The nail will grow back slowly but the red area will be sensitive and sore for a few days until it dries up.
