My dog's toe looks broken, red, and crackles. Can I wait to see vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 78 lbs

I think my dog broke his little pinky toe on his right rear paw and it looks like it's red there's no cuts when I minute belated it feels like it crackles. I'd like to wait a few days before going to the vet to see if it heals do you have any suggestions? what else to look for or watch for?

Poor Rock! If he is acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking, active, not excessively painful) you can monitor him at home for the next few days to see if the problem resolves. I would recommend restricting his exercise as much as possible to give the affected paw a chance to heal - short leash walks to potty only, no running or jumping. If the paw looks red and seems sore, you can also try soaking it in warm water and Epsom salts to help with the soreness and irritation.

If you are not seeing any improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if he is non-weightbearing on the affected paw or seems very painful, then I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. He/she can take x-rays if needed to help determine the problem, and can also prescribe safe and effective pain medication to make him more comfortable.

    Poor Groot! It sounds like he may have injured himself. His toe does look quite red and swollen, and it may be infected. Because he's been limping since Sunday and you are now seeing redness and swelling, it's time to see the vet for it. I would take him into a vet right away. Best of luck.

    Ouch, poor little Charlie! It could be that he injured his toe, has a foreign body in it like a grass seed or foxtail, or could have an infection in the toe. I would take him into the vet in the morning to have the toe examined, which may include x-rays. Tonight, you can try soaking his foot in an Epsom salt bath with may temporarily help with the redness and swelling. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe pain medication as needed. Also rest him tonight, taking him out to toilet on a lead only and bringing him right back in when he's done. Have him seen by a vet tomorrow.

A foreign body or a fracture are both possible and ideally a check up would be required to determine exactly the underlying cause and give you appropriate treatment options. you can try to salt water bath his paw but if you don't see any results in the next 36hours a check up would be essential.

My dog is limping with a broken nail and red paw. When to see a vet?
You are correct in that it looks like Ollie has damaged a toe nail. This can be quite painful to dog and would explain the limping. Be sure to keep him from licking the nail. If he does, it is easy for an infection to occur. As long as the lameness is resolving and the toe does not become swollen, he should heal up fine. If either of those things occur though, he will need to see his veterinarian. I hope this helps and Ollie is back to normal soon!

My dog is limping. What to do for a possible broken or dislocated toe?
Poor Romeo. I would advise to not wrap the toe. I have seen too many owners who applied the wrap too tightly and caused damage to the foot by cutting off the blood supply. I do recommend to significantly restrict his activity. He should not be allowed to walk around the house, go for walks, climb up and down on furniture or run or jump. If he is still limping beyond two days or if he seems extremely painful, I recommend to have him examined sooner. If you notice any swelling on the toe then I would also advise to have him seen sooner. A broken or dislocated toe can get worse if it is not splinted quickly. I hope he starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

The toe could be broken or dislocated, or it might be a soft tissue injury. The fact that he is limping means that he does have some level of pain even if he's not crying. I would recommend having your vet examine the toe - they might feel confident that it is a soft tissue injury once they are able to feel the toe and the joint or they might recommend an x-ray. They can also prescribe safe pain medication for him.
