My dog has ticks. Can I give her leftover Papi Doxy for tick illness?

There are a few oral products that generally work very well for ticks if you can get them. They are Nexgard and Simparica. They are tablets that you give once a month. Both dogs should be started on this medications your veterinarian agreed. First you will need to speak with your veterinarian to make sure these medications are not contraindicated. Most parents can take them but pets with seizures may not. Make sure to ask your local veterinarian if there are concerns for tickborne diseases in your area. If so, your veterinarian may want to treat the pets prophylactically. Treating the local environment as best you can with insecticides may also help. I hope this gives you some ideas. Best of luck.

Hello. Not all medical doctors will treat a person bitten by a tick with antibiotics. It is overkill for you, as well as overkill for your pet. It is just not necessary. However, if you live in a Lymes endemic area, or you are immunocompromised, then antibiotics might be appropriate, but we absolutely do not automatically treat dogs with tick bites. I am sorry I do not know exactly what type of ticks are present in India. In the united states doxycycline is a common antibiotic for tick born disease. Patients can have exposure to tick born disease and not be sick. IF a patient is sick from tick born disease they usually have a fever and joint pain. I would recommend using a tick prevention that kills a tick with out having to bite the patient. Also, ask your vet if a vaccine is available. In the US for lyme disease we recommend the lyme vaccine with tick prevention. If you find a tick removing is a great options. I hope that helps

Yes it sounds right. It seems Olivia is affected by Ehrlichia Canis (transmitted by ticks). At the moment she has high temperature. The doxycycline (antibiotics) needs to be given eventually for longer periods (3 weeks) if infection is particularly persistent. Treatment plan seems right. Doxy is the right medication, but he definitely needs to be on a tick prevention product like nexguard or advantix every year during tick season in your area to prevent further infestation by ticks.

Most of these diseases though are treated with an oral medication called doxycycline.
