How to prevent dog tick fever? Is doxycycline effective for treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Tick bites do not cause a fever by themselves per se. What causes the fever is the infection they can transmit rather. Most of these diseases though are treated with an oral medication called doxycycline. That is something your veterinarian can prescribe for Julie if they think she is suffering from one of the typical tick borne diseases. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Tick fever must be treated with antibiotics and unfortunately a veterinary check up is needed to dispense appropriate treatment. There are no effective home-made remedies for it and the type of infection (tick fever may be caused by different type of bugs basically) must be recognized first to have appropriate treatment.

Because I have never been to India, I am unfamiliar with the environment, climate, and external parasites such as ticks that inhabit your climate. So I can only give you a perspective from a veterinarian practicing in the United States. During the summer months, many different types of ticks are commonly found on dogs and outdoor cats. Especially if those animals are not being treated with a flea and tick preventative on a monthly basis. Ticks can cause a variety of diseases and problems for your dog and have the potential of carrying diseases like Lyme disease. The good news, however, is that there are so many great canine flea and tick preventative’s on the market today that are safe and effective for dogs of your puppies age. Some examples of these different types of medications are things like bravecto, frontline, Advantix, or seresto collars. I encourage you to consult your local veterinarian and schedule an appointment to get him started on one of these flea and tick preventative as soon as possible to keep Austin happy and healthy. However, this is concerning and warrants letting your veterinarian know as he may for example benefit from adding pain control medications added to his treatment protocol. Not all ticks carry the bacteria that leads to tick fever, so it is likely because a tick with tick fever has not bitten your dog yet. Unfortunately, once dogs get an infection, they do not develop long term immunity and can get the infection again. To protect a dog from getting tick fever, it is recommended to have the dog on a flea / tick preventative such as Frontline, Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica. I prefer to use the Nexgard or Bravecto as I've seen the best results with both products for preventing ticks and fleas. I hope this helps! Doxycycline would not normally cause trembling or any neurological problems. It does sometimec cause the dog (and people also) to not be hungry or get nauseous. I would not worry about the trembling in his sleep, he may be dreaming which might cause the trembling. Keep giving him the Doxycycline and prednisone as prescribed by your veterinarian, as tick borne diseases such as Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis can be lethal if not completely cured. Doxycycline is usually the best choice.

Doxy is the right medication, but he definitely needs to be on a tick prevention product like nexguard or advantix every year during tick season in your area to prevent further infestation by ticks.
