My dog is throwing up and drooling but acting normal. Is it serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 135 lbs

Hi! My great dane has thrown up 3 times in the past hour or so. He is dripping clear non stringy saliva, but also trying to play with our other dog. Should I be as worried as I am?

If he has indeed produced vomit (as apposed to retching without getting anything up), and he’s drooling but playful, it’s reasonable to give him through the night and see how he is in the morning. The drooling is probably because he’s nauseous. If he seems dumpy or lethargic in the morning, or if he’s still drooling or continues vomiting or has no interest in food, you need to take him in tomorrow.

I hope that’s helpful! Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
