My dog threw up plastic toy and grass, but seems fine. Vet needed?

Pet's info: Dog | English Pointer | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

My dog started puking up plastic from his chew toy and grass early this morning, i think he just had to get it out of his system he seemed perfectly fine after puking and is still fine now. Should I still take him to the vet?

I am sorry to hear about Copper. If you believe he vomited most of the toy (for example if you have the toy and can tell most of it is accounted for) and he is energetic/no longer vomiting/not painful in the belly area, then you can try monitoring him. If however, he starts vomiting again, starts acting lethargic, starts acting as though he is painful, or if he doesn't want to eat later today (I wouldn't offer him food for a few hours to let his stomach settle) then these would be signs of a possible obstruction and would be reasons to seek veterinary care.

Hello, and thanks for your question about Harvey. It sounds like you have a clear indication that Harvey ate a plastic toy - so now the question is whether he vomited enough of it up, or if there are still pieces left behind to cause problems.

If Harvey is otherwise continuing to act totally normal, begging for food, good energy, etc, then I'd watch him for the rest of today. However, if symptoms continue into tomorrow, or if at any point he seems to be feeling more sick (lower energy, loss of appetite, etc), then I'd definitely have a vet take a look. Sometimes they just need some supportive GI meds to help their stomach calm down - but if Harvey is unlucky he could need surgery to get the rest of that toy out.

There is always the possibility that there is more frisbee in her stomach and/or intestinal tract. Toys such as these do have the potential for causing an intestinal obstruction. I would not take her into a vet now, but monitor her for the next 72 hours. If she continues to vomit, stops eating, starts having diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts throwing up water, or becomes very lethargic, those are signs of obstruction, and then I would take her into a vet right away.

As long as he is eating and drinking normally, I would not be concerned. If he begins to vomit or loses his appetite, then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him and perform some diagnostic testing such as x-rays to help rule out a foreign body obstruction from the plastic. Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Good luck and have a good night!

My dog ate a plastic toy and threw it up. Should I go to the vet?

Generally, the plastic of cat toys is fairly thin and flexible, but if it is hard with sharp edges, it is certainly possible that it can cause problems similar to a bone. If Mia vomited the toy, hopefully this will not be an issue. If Mia continues to vomit, does not eat, does not seem to feel well or is straining to defecate, I would certainly have your veterinarian examine her. Good luck! My dog vomits, eats grass, and chews strings. Should I see a vet?

I would try to keep him from eating any strings if possible because these can cause an obstruction in the GI tract that could require surgery to repair. If he is no longer vomiting, eating and acting normal with normal bowel movements, you could continue to just watch him. if he starts any abnormal behavior or symptoms restart, i would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able determine the cause and get him treated before things get worse. Plus, since he is so small, i worry he may get dehydrated quickly. The vigorous smelling and licking could be just his personality or a result of anxiety. If it happens often, it may be something to talk to your vet about to see if he needs anti-anxiety meds. My dog ate fabric toy pieces and threw up white foam. Is she okay?

Of course the concern would be a gastrointestinal obstruction from her eating pieces of her toy. At this point, if she has only vomited once, you may continue to monitor her closely to see if it is only going to be an isolated episode. Watch closely for signs associated with an obstruction such as nausea, vomiting, anorexia and abdominal pain. If observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment at that point. Good luck and have a great day!
