Why is my dog's hair thinning, with dandruff and black skin specks?

I typically recommend using Free Form Snip Tips help keep the skin and coat healthy. If they are too expensive than you could add one teaspoon of coconut oil to her food and see if that helps. If not, than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause of her skin and coat problem. She could have a skin infection and need an antibiotic. You could also bathe her with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps.

Thinning hair and a darkening of the skin could indicate something like allergies, a diet that is not right for her, fleas or (less likely) and endocrine condition. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. If Zoey is wanting to itch the area, you need to protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Make sure she is up to date on flea prevention. Diets and supplements take 2-4 weeks to take effect. If the changes are not improving after 2 weeks or if they are getting worse, have Zoey examined by the veterinarian. The flakes are most likely the dry skin coming off. You can give him an omega3 fatty acid supplement for sure. You need to use a product made for dogs. I can recommend Triglyceride Omega by Vetoquinol but there is a wide choice of products on the market. After 3-4 weeks of supplementation you should see improvement.

Not all dog foods have high enough amounts of omegas to help with skin function. They are also used to stabilize/preserve the food. There are lots of different causes for dandruff, including allergies, skin parasites, general dryness or unhealthy skin for another reason. I would start with a vet visit to rule out a more serious medical condition and talk about higher doses of omegas and perhaps particular medicated bathes to help. I really like the brand nordic naturals for the fish oils.
