My female dog has thick gray discharge. Is it a UTI or infection?

Some discharge is normal but it is generally clearish or slightly opaque. Vaginal discharge can indicate an infection in the uterus. I recommend to have her examined today in case this discharge is related to a uterine infection. Uterine infections can lead to a life threatening septicemia so it's best to play it safe. The discharge could be coming from the urinary tract or the reproductive tract, especially if unspayed. Cystitis is not normal so i am assuming your vet saw bladder wall thickening on the ultrasound. Infection needs to be ruled out. Has a urine culture been performed? If not this is the next step. Was the reproductive tract evaluated with the ultrasound to rule out uterine abnormalities? Unspayed females can develop many problems like pyometra, mucometra, hydeometra, tumors, etc. Additionally a sterile vaginal exam is indicated to rule out abnormalities in this part of the reproductive tract. These signs could be due potentially to a uterine infection. That is usually called pyometra and could be a surgical emergency unfortunately. I would recommend a check up at your local veterinarian as soon as possible.

This could definitely be a sign of a UTI or a vaginitis (infection in the vagina). I would take a picture for your vet to see just in case they request it, but this isn't a requirement. I would have your vet take a look at her. They will likely run a urinalysis and start her on some meds if needed. I hope this helps!

It sounds like Margo may have an infection in the uterus or lower genital tract. This is most common following a recent heat cycle. I would advise that she be examined by her veterinarian to confirm this. If she does have a uterine infection, your vet can advise you about the best treatment which may include oral antibiotics or having her spayed depending on the severity.

Hi, has she been passing urine outside ? If so would you be able to take a urine sample ? I would then consider to have an abdominal ultrasound done on Yuzu, it can be done without an anaesthetic and it will give you more information about a possible pyrometra or any other abnormalities in the abdomen. If an ultrasound does not provide all the information required, then X-rays would be my next suggestion. Hope this helps,

I would let your vet know if this is a new or sudden symptom. In some cases, some vaginal discharge can be normal (and may be concentrated if Brandy is wearing a diaper), however since she has a history of UTIs it is best to rule anything out such as continuing bladder or vaginal issues if this symptom is new. Signs of something more serious (such as a new infection) may cause the discharge to turn yellow, cloudy, or green.
