Why is my diabetic dog vomiting brown liquid? Is it organ failure?

Vomiting can be a sign of elevated glucose levels. If your pet has skipped an insulin treatment then this can very well be the reason why she is now sick. It is best to feed her a meal and get her back on her insulin regimen as soon as possible to avoid prolonged high sugar levels that will continue to make her ill. If she is also refraining from eating and continues to act ill, then it is best to get her seen by a vet right away because she may be ketoacidotic (high level of ketones in the body due to excessively high sugar levels in the bloodstream) and in need of emergency treatment to help stabilize her.

Poor guy. To stop vomiting you will need a vet to prescribe Cerenia oral or give a Cerenia injection. There isn't anything over the counter unfortunately that will stop vomiting. Also I would want to know why Nicole is vomiting to begin with. Your vet likely will want to run some tests (bloodwork +/- radiographs) to determine the underlying cause of his vomiting spells so that we treat the source of the vomiting as well. Vomiting can be caused by just about any disease process in dogs, so it is very non-specific, and no treatment is contraindicated in a diabetic dog. Until you can get him in to be seen you can try feeding him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle his stomach a little bit. However, after your vet visit you should have a good treatment plan in order to hopefully help control his vomiting long term. I'm sorry to hear that your dog is having this problem! No, having him put under anesthesia for his teeth cleaning would not have anything to do with causing diabetes. If he's vomiting again, I would recommend taking him back to your vet right away for a recheck - diabetic dogs can develop a serious, life-threatening complication called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) if they are vomiting and not eating, so it's very important to find out what is causing the vomiting and have him treated as soon as possible.

It sounds as Ruby is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. it could also be an imbalance in her diabetes medications. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

My first thought is making sure Pepper was correctly diagnosed so seeing some bloodwork/urine results would be very helpful. If this were the case the insulin itself could be making her very sick and weak. This is a life-threatening emergency. My next thought is that she was correctly diagnosed but she has some secondary complication- namely diabetic keto-acidosis. This is a life-threatening complication of unregulated diabetes which causes vomiting, dehydration, lethargy and can even progress to shock and death. Either way, I am extremely concerned and would STRONGLY recommend you visit the emergency vet IMMEDIATELY. Pepper could absolutely die in the next 48 hours depending on what is going on. It sounds like his diabetes is not controlled well. I would start with a glucose check and a urine test. This will confirm if the sugar is still high and if he has ketones in his urine. Ketones can make them sicker and feel bad. They usually require IV fluids and a different, strong but shorter acting insulin to help get it under control they can also do blood work to check for cushings or a low thyroid or a secondary infection somewhere as these are common with diabetes and makes it harder to control diabetes until these are treated also. Once the blood sugar stop fluctating and staying high, his appetite will come back and the drinking slow down.

The sleeping and standing in abnormal ways is indicative of significant abdominal pain. Brown vomit is concerning for a GI obstruction or serious pancreatitis. I would recommend that Chato get checked out by a vet ASAP. After examination, the vet may recommend blood work and/or x-rays to determine what is the cause so they can discuss an appropriate treatment protocol.
