My dog's tail has a painful, oozing ulcer. Should I see a vet?

I am sorry to hear about Soya. This lesion appears to be quite deep /extensive and I do not think that topical therapy alone will be sufficient to treat this. I would recommend getting Soya to a vet as soon as possible. They can shave around the wound and clean it/debride any tissue that is not healthy. Depending on the appearance in person they may also recommend a biopsy of the area. They can prescribe systemic antibiotics and she also may benefit from anti-inflammatory medication/pain relief. Ouch, poor Peaches! Yes, it does look like she could have an ulcer. I would take her into a vet immediately. This is something that needs to be examined by a vet now so it can be treated right away. Ulcers can be very serious, and if left untreated, they can lead to permanent vision loss. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Poor Cookie! I would have her seen by a vet for this wound. It sounds like from her behavior that it could be painful, and there's nothing you can give her at home for the pain. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If she was bitten by that cat, the wound could easily become infected and she needs antibiotic to prevent infection from occurring. The vet can prescribe these as well. Take Cookie into a vet as soon as possible to have this wound treated so it can heal. In the meantime, you can clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap.

Place an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. Keep the area clean and dry. A dab of a triple antibiotic ointment once or twice daily may help. Monitor for swelling, discharge or discomfort associated with the area. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian. Since the skin is broken, he is at risk for infection and may need antibiotics. If he is painful, your vet can prescribe or dispense a pain medication also.

This looks very nasty. This likely is a bacterial dermatitis which needs to be seen urgently by a veterinarian. Unfortunately these tend to spread like wildfire, Maybe you could ask your vet to see you inbetween clients. If that is not possible, I suggest clipping as much hair off the wound and around it until you see healthy skin, You will be surprised that the sore is much bigger than it appears, Once you have done that, wash it with some chlorhexidine or wound wash available in your pharmacy or drugstore, Pat dry, and put some Neosporine ointment on the area, Unfortunately there are no OTC pain killers available for this kind of wound. Your dog will need to have another wound treatment at your vet and will need oral prescription antibiotics and possibly will be given an ointment. Do not put any ointment on the lesion tomorrow before you go to the vet so he can examine the skin properly. Do not let your puppy lick this wound.
