What should I do if my dog has a skin ulcer under his armpit?

Place an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. Keep the area clean and dry. A dab of a triple antibiotic ointment once or twice daily may help. Monitor for swelling, discharge or discomfort associated with the area. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian. Since the skin is broken, he is at risk for infection and may need antibiotics. If he is painful, your vet can prescribe or dispense a pain medication also.

Hello. When you say Wall Barley, are you talking about a Warble? This is a fly larvae that is laid by a fly in a scratch or cut in the skin. It does not present as you describe. If your ointment seems to be helping, then continue this. It is a good combination of a steroid, antibiotic & fungal medication. If the lesions continue to reoccur, you may need to have a biopsy of the skin & active lesions to diagnose the underlying problem. Poor Cooper! Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Based on the pictures it looks like Cooper’s skin is likely causing him pain, but dogs are very good at hiding signs of discomfort. I recommend making an appointment to have Cooper seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the sores you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely wan to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment.

Poor guy. I would recommend cleaning it with an antiseptic like Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water OR Chlorhexidine solution 3% or 2% diluted with water until light blue mixture. This will help keep the area clean until you can get him in to see your vet. You can try placing an oversized t-shirt on him to help keep the area from being rubbed constantly when he lays down. It sounds like he has a bacterial skin infection (puppy pyoderma). You could bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo but he may need an antibiotic and possibly a corticosteroid to treat the problem. Have your vet take a look at him to determine the best way to treat his problem.

The skin looks swollen and is seems to be getting infected. I would suggest you take him to the vet for an exam as it is impossible for me to "diagnose" him over the internet. Poor Summer! This lesion looks like a fairly significant ulcerated mass that could be either benign or malignant. The only way to definitively diagnose this issue is through a fine needle aspirate and microscopic examination of cells, or a surgical biopsy. Summer needs to go to her vet for evaluation of this lesion and will likely need surgical removal of the lesion and a course of antibiotics to treat any infection that may have developed as a result of the ulceration. I hope that she's on the mend soon!
