My puppy has a growing, hot knot on his tail. Is it serious?

Hello. From the photo that you provided, this looks like a growth that may be benign or malignant. It may also be a cyst. Your veterinarian can try to do a fine needle aspirate on the lump in order to determine if it is urgent to surgically remove it. As to whether the hot spot caused it…. that is not likely. Your pet may be licking or chewing at it and it may have had some part in causing the hotspot, but I cannot say for sure. This looks like an infected cyst. Dogs have a scent area on their tails that can enlarge and get infected such as this. You can apply a hot compress to the area several times daily to see if it will drain. That will increase the blood supply to help it heal faster. Bringing Ben in for an exam would confirm a diagnosis and they would probably prescribe antibiotics which would lessen the healing time. The bump could be caused by an infection, allergic reaction, cyst, benign or cancerous mass. The only way to know for sure is to have your vet do a fine needle aspirate. It is a very easy proceedure that takes just a few minutes. Once it is diagnose, your vet can decide the best treatment. Please call your vet and schedule an appointment, especially since it seems to be bothering her.

Yes, I would be concerned this may be serious, especially if it has grown quickly. The broken surface is very high risk for infection and I recommend an urgent assessment by your vet; biopsy and possible tail amputation may be required. In some male dogs, a hormone dependent condition can cause similar masses and castration can be helpful in these situations

Aww poor Beau! The good news is that this tail looks pretty good to me. I can’t say for certain without looking at it but this could be normal healthy granulation tissue filling in his wound/surgery site. It could possibly be a small suture reaction or incision infection. If you can keep Beau from licking it (E collar), you can apply a triple antibiotic cream (Neosporin, etc) once or twice daily. It is difficult to tell what types of bumps those are without feeling them and potentially doing a fine needle aspirate on them. Given that Kobe is so young, they are hopefully something as simple as a cyst, pustule/pimple, or even an insect bite. You can try applying a warm compress to the area for 5 minutes a few times a day to see if they resolve or rupture. If they don't and especially if they are getting bigger or you are finding more of them, I would take Kobe in to a vet to get checked out. The vet can use a small needle to suck out some cells (fine needle aspirate) and look at them under the microscope to try to figure out what these bumps are and if they need to be treated.

This very large growth needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take Demon to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.
