What is this painful red bump on my dog's tail tip? Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

Hi I just found a medium-sized red bump at the tip of my dog's tail. I can tell it is bothering her because she is walking with her tail down and has been pretty sedentary all day. The bump is semi-hard and it hurts her if I touch it. I took a picture of it, but not sure how to show you the picture.

The bump could be caused by an infection, allergic reaction, cyst, benign or cancerous mass. The only way to know for sure is to have your vet do a fine needle aspirate. It is a very easy proceedure that takes just a few minutes. Once it is diagnose, your vet can decide the best treatment. Please call your vet and schedule an appointment, especially since it seems to be bothering her.

This lump/bump/growth should be ideally examined by your local vet to have a diagnosis established.
Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature.
Differentials would include skin cysts, infections, benign or more malignant type of tumors.

Your veterinarian can try to do a fine needle aspirate on the lump in order to determine if it is urgent to surgically remove it. As to whether the hot spot caused it…. that is not likely. Your pet may be licking or chewing at it and it may have had some part in causing the hotspot, but I cannot say for sure. My dog's tail base is red, itchy, and has a bump. What should I do?

It could be an allergic reaction to an insect bite or a traumatic wound. Itchy bumps are almost always allergic in nature however. You can try topical soothing creams (sold at your local pet store) for allergic reactions, and cleaning it with chlorhexidine solution 3% or iodine diluted 50:50 with warm water. This will help some with the inflammation. If it still isn't better after 24-48 hrs then it is best to have your vet take a look at it and potentially give her stronger medications to treat it.

I recommend to have Leia examined by the veterinarian. Skin masses can be many things but red raised masses are especially concerning for a skin cancer called a Mast Cell tumor. Your veterinarian will need to collect a sample of cell to examine under the microscope to determine what this is and if further treatment is needed. Have this checked out soon.

The veterinarian will use a small needle to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. This will ideally give you a diagnosis for the bump. A histiocytoma is common on the extremities of a young dog. This is a spontaneous growth usually goes away on its own. However, a cancerous mass known as a mast cell tumor has the same outward appearance. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him to prevent any further self-trauma. I hope this information helps!
