My dog's tail lost hair from hives. Will it grow back if scarred?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 45 lbs

I have a bull terrier the age of seven, she's been getting hives since she was about 2 years old. I give her apoquel to treat her symptoms. There is a section of her tail which has lost hair, and I would like to try to regrow it. It is mostly due to a blister caused by the hives that enlarged. Once the blister finally popped, the hair never grew back. Is there something that I can do, or is the tissue scarred for life?

It sounds like you do a great job taking care of Athen! Unfortunately I doubt there is anything you can do to get that hair to regrow. Talk to your vet about screening her for hypothyroidism or other endocrine diseases that would inhibit her ability to grow hair on her own, but if its truly scarred, the hair may not come back no matter what you do. You can try a skin and coat supplement from a pet store, or talk to your veterinarian about a supplement such as DermCaps (which comes in a liquid for cats); these won't hurt anything, and may help.
Best of luck with her! Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
