This is probably a bacterial infection, in many cases this is due to the water bowl, you need to switch the water bowls to stainless steel bowls and you must change the water several times a day. the condition will need to be treated with an antibiotic course, you will need to take Alex to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated.

Lesions like this can be related to acne, folliculitis or allergies. Typically this does respond to antibiotics but if allergies are the issue, the condition can reoccur. Dogs breeds with heavy jowls/lips are more prone to this condition. Washing all the food/water dishes and all chew toys once a week can help. Your veterinarian may also carry medicated wipes the clean the area daily. Lastly, if allergies are suspected, Jax may need a special diet or even blood testing to determine the offending allergen. While it's difficult to say for certain if it is a staph infection I agree that it looks bacterial, but a fungal infection could look very similar. Skin infections in this area can occur secondary to irritation so make sure you use a glass or stainless steel bowl and clean it frequently. Allergies would be another possibility. This looks fairly severe in your picture - I'd recommend seeing your vet in person to determine if oral antibiotics are needed.

Piper could have a resistant bacterial infection, chronic irritation leading to an infection/whiteheads or even a type of mite. Sometimes keeping the area clean and preventing any trauma such as rubbing or pawing at the area is helpful. Other times prescription strength medication is needed from your veterinarian.
