My dog's penis is swollen and won't go back in. Why is he licking?

There appears to be some major inflammation at the tip of the penis, most likely from an injury or excessive licking. My best recommendation to you would be to have Taco examined by your veterinarian. I would bring a urine sample to he appointment if you are able to catch one. It could be he is suffering from paraphimosis, which is an inability to retract the penis back into the sheath. This can quickly turn into an emergency situation, as constricting of the blood flow will lead to a larger engorgement of the penis, necrosis (dead tissue), and potential damage to the urethra. If his penis hasn't been out too long (less than an hour), you can try to put it back yourself. First, thoroughly clean the penis, making sure there is no foreign material (such as fur) that is wrapped around the penis. Take a bag of frozen veggies wrapped in a towel, and apply it to the penis for five minutes at a time to try to reduce the swelling. Packaged peas work very well because they are mobile around the penis. Then apply a lubricant such as KY Jelly onto the penis, and very gently try to move the penis back into the sheath. Very gently try to push the penis back into the sheath, or try to gently pull the sheath over the penis. If this does not work, or if the penis has been outside the sheath for more than 30 minutes to an hour, you will need to take Lukas into your vet. Best of luck.

Your dog may have been licking his penis tip a bit excessively and therefore it appears swollen, If the swelling does not subside within the next day or two and/or if he cannot retract the penis tip all the way into the prepuce, or if the color changes, then you will need to have him examined by your vet, He may need some medications or ointment to reduce the swelling and to keep the tip from drying out.

Poor Brownie! Yes this looks inflammed and painful. I recommend using a cone to stop the excess licking of the area and taking him in for an exam of his penis and a urinalysis. This could be from an infection, tumor, or trauma to the penis. In order to solve this problem, the exact cause needs to be diagnosed, so the specific treatment can be given. The longer the penis is out, the more difficult it will be to treat, so I recommend taking him to a vet as soon as possible to get this treated. The best thing you can do for this at home is flush the area with cold water for five minutes, three times a day. Avoid putting any ointments or chemicals on it, because it will just be licked off and can make the condition worse. I hope that helps and Pinto gets better soon.

Chico could have a urethral prolapse, an infection or some type of trauma to that area. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Without treatment that tissue could become dead/necrotic, he could have trouble urinating which leads to other issues like kidney failure as well as long term damage like scarring. Do not give him any human medications as it can be toxic to dogs. Keep him from licking at the area and remove and discharge with a warm, moist, clean cloth.
