My dog's penis is swollen, but he's not in pain. What's wrong?

Dogs can become sexually aroused even if they aren't sexually active, getting an erection. If his penis is swollen and sticking out, I would be concerned that the swelling could potentially constrict his urethra, leading to difficulty urinating. Because he's having trouble walking and his penis is swollen, I recommend you taking him into your vet to have the paraphimosis resolved. It's important to have him seen now, as it's causing him difficulty walking and you don't want it to lead to a constriction of the urethra.

Ouch, poor guy! Plain Vaseline is better than a medication like entederm, so I’d use that to see if it helps him slide back in. However, that looks frighteningly swollen, and if it doesn’t go back in, he does need to go in to the vet. If that’s stuck out and continues to swell, the blood supply to the tip will become compromised. Sprinkling a generous amount of raw plain sugar on the exposed tip may help bring the swelling down. Thank you for providing pictures of your dog's penis! That is not normal at all, and he could have a severe infection or may have injured his penis. I'm very concerned by the appearance of it, especially the purplish bruised area. It looks very swollen, and in my opinion he needs veterinary care now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

An abnormal shape to the penis could indicate inflammation or a tumor. I can’t tell from the photo if Wilie’s penis looks abnormal or not. This is a situation where a veterinarian visit is the best option. I recommend to have Willie examined by the veterinarian to get a better idea of what is going on. Your dog may have been licking his penis tip a bit excessively and therefore it appears swollen, If the swelling does not subside within the next day or two and/or if he cannot retract the penis tip all the way into the prepuce, or if the color changes, then you will need to have him examined by your vet, He may need some medications or ointment to reduce the swelling and to keep the tip from drying out.

There are a couple of things this could be causing this to happen to Bruzer. It could be that he has an erection, and the penis is swollen and the tip is out because he is aroused. He could also be suffering from paraphimosis, which is an inability to retract the penis back into the sheath. This can quickly turn into an emergency situation, as constricting of the blood flow will lead to a larger engorgement of the penis, necrosis (dead tissue), and potential damage to the urethra. Should you suspect it isn't an erection and it is paraphimosis, I will give you some advice that may help Bruzer. If his penis hasn't been out too long (less than an hour), you can try to put it back yourself. First, thoroughly clean the penis, making sure there is no foreign material (such as fur) that is wrapped around the penis. Take a bag of frozen veggies wrapped in a towel, and apply it to the penis for five minutes at a time to try to reduce the swelling. Packaged peas work very well because they are mobile around the penis. Then apply a lubricant such as KY Jelly onto the penis, and very gently try to move the penis back into the sheath. Very gently try to push the penis back into the sheath, or try to gently pull the sheath over the penis. If this does not work, or if the penis has been outside the sheath for more than 30 minutes to an hour, you will need to take Bruzer into your vet.

Chico could have a urethral prolapse, an infection or some type of trauma to that area. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Without treatment that tissue could become dead/necrotic, he could have trouble urinating which leads to other issues like kidney failure as well as long term damage like scarring. Do not give him any human medications as it can be toxic to dogs. Keep him from licking at the area and remove and discharge with a warm, moist, clean cloth.
