My dog has a swollen, painless wound on his neck. What is it?

It is difficult to know the cause without seeing the swelling. Your dog could have an infection, allergic reaction, injury, or a mass causing the swelling. Your dog really needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause and then treat the problem. Your dog may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, or other medications to treat.

The swelling may be due to bleeding, inflammation, or even air under the skin if his trachea was damaged in the fight. Some of these problems can be quite serious. Your vet can examine Meeko and take x-rays if needed to help determine if his injuries are serious - it's possible that he might need surgery or hospitalization, depending on what is found. At the very least, your vet will likely prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to treat the wound.

It sounds like Maya may have an abscess, which is a localized pocket of infection. This needs to be flushed sterilely, and she will need antibiotics to treat it if she does have an abscess. I would have her seen by a vet today to treat this wound.

I wonder if the swelling was unrelated to the surgery and was actually a spider bite or something similar? Please get him assessed by your vet as soon as possible, this painful swelling may be from internal bleeding, an abscess and infection from the wound or a ruptured salivary gland. Your vet may wish to drain and test a sample of the fluid before starting medications. Keep him fasting for 12hrs before his appointment as sedation may be required
