My puppy's jaw is swollen and painful. Is it related to her underbite?

Loosing baby teeth and having the adult teeth grow in can sometimes cause some pain and discomfort during this process. However, the red and swollen area you described does sound more concerning than just teething pain and may indicate an infection, impacted tooth, or tooth fracture and does warrant a trip to your veterinarian very soon for an oral exam and evaluation. Until you are able to take him in to see his veterinarian, you can try watering down his hard kibble a bit to softer it up and make it easier for him to eat or you can feed him a bit of wet or soft food too. Those images could either be a bite that is infected, or could be a very enlarged lymph node and a condition called 'puppy strangles' where the lymph nodes swell up. Either way, it looks very serious and requires medical attention. The treatment for these two different conditions is very different and treatment for one could make the other much worse. I recommend you bring your puppy to a veterinarian right away for treatment. Best of luck with your little one, I hope he feels better soon!

If the swelling is hot and painful to touch, it is probably an abscess. In this case, you should take Angie to your local vets for an appointment today. If the swelling is not bothering your puppy, is soft and is not warm to touch, it could be an allergic reaction. In that case, you can monitor Angie at home for a few hours and apply a cold compress on the face every 1-2 hrs. If it is an allergy, the swelling should go down in the next 5-6 hrs.

There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It is not possible to know with just a picture. However, it is not recommended to give a dog Advil as this is not used in veterinary medicine due to its possible toxicity especially without possibly an appropriate dose. There is not much you can do at home without going to a veterinarian. For that reason, I recommend you consider going to your veterinarian for further assessment and possible treatment. They will start with a physical examination and possibly diagnostics depending on what the issue seems to be. Inappetence, vomiting and swelling in the neck are unusual in a dog his age; I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to see if there is an underlying issue going on that needs to be addressed beyond teething, as with any young animal, we would want to catch it early to try to prevent it from becoming worse. Hello, poor Miko. That looks like it is more associated with his neck than jaw. I would be concerned about a potential infection (abscess) especially if mom has snapped at the puppies. Otherwise It could be various other things. I would have your veterinarian take a look at it and see if he feels like it is attached to any of the structure of the neck. A neck ultrasound might buy you the best detail and information. Hope this helps.
