My puppy won't eat, vomited, has swollen jaw. Is it teething?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sounds like Charlie is is some real discomfort! Loosing baby teeth and having the adult teeth grow in can sometimes cause some pain and discomfort during this process. However, the red and swollen area you described does sound more concerning than just teething pain and may indicate an infection, impacted tooth, or tooth fracture and does warrant a trip to your veterinarian very soon for an oral exam and evaluation. Until you are able to take him in to see his veterinarian, you can try watering down his hard kibble a bit to softer it up and make it easier for him to eat or you can feed him a bit of wet or soft food too. I would not expect swollen lymph nodes secondary to teething. Infections, including a bacterial infection commonly known as 'puppy strangles' can cause enlarged lymph nodes. The salivary glands are also in this same area and it is possible that he has inflamed salivary glands as well. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for a physical examination to confirm that the lymph nodes are actually swollen. If the lymph nodes are swollen they might recommend a fine needle aspirate which is a procedure that uses a small needle to obtain cells that are sent to a pathologist for review.

The most common reason for the swelling under his jaw are enlarged lymph nodes. With the increased thirst and swelling under his neck I am concerned he has a cancer called Lymphoma. He will need a physical exam and blood work. The most common cause of increased thirst with lymphoma is an increased calcium. Other causes for the swelling under his neck could be an allergic reaction, swollen salivary glands or lymph nodes that are swollen from something else other than cancer (reactive to something in his mouth or ears). The facial dropping sounds neurologic. 2 weeks is a long time to not eat. I would call tuesday when your Vet opens to get an appointment. It sounds like he may have sustained a jaw injury. Did he have any trauma that you know of? The other possibility is that he may be coming down with a virus. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Shiva! The swelling around his anus is very unusual for a dog this young. It appears to be in the tissue around his anus. This can be seen in older intact male dogs and is called a perineal hernia. Stool, bladder and other abdominal contents can get stuck in the hernia. The swelling around his anus is very concerning for a puppy this young and I highly recommend having a Vet examined him as soon as possible. The vomiting may or may not be related. If he is straining to urinate or defecate then the vomiting is likely related. Other causes of vomiting/not eating are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo) and bacterial infections, he ate something that is stuck and causing a blockage, ate something outside that is upsetting his stomach, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat/table food. Hello, poor Miko. That looks like it is more associated with his neck than jaw. I would be concerned about a potential infection (abscess) especially if mom has snapped at the puppies. Otherwise It could be various other things. I would have your veterinarian take a look at it and see if he feels like it is attached to any of the structure of the neck. A neck ultrasound might buy you the best detail and information. Hope this helps.

The swelling can be from an infected or inflamed salivary gland or lymph node. He could also have an abscess from foreign material penetrating the mouth or from the outside, be experiencing an allergic reaction or possibly even have a tooth root abscess. An enlarged lymph node can also be from lymphoma, a type of cancer. Usually though more than one lymph node is swollen if a dog has lymphoma. I hope this helps and I wish Knuckles a speedy recovery!
