My dog has a swollen ear. Is it dangerous to wait for the vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | 7 years and 11 months old | 55 lbs

Woke up this morning with my dog having a swollen ear. He was scratching it last night so I'm pretty sure a hematoma occurred. My vet can't see him until tomorrow morning at 11am. Is it dangerous to wait a day? What should u do in the mean time?

Without seeing a photo my best guess is that Biggie Smalls has an ear hematoma - just like you thought. It is not dangerous to wait a day to see the vet. The only thing you need to do in the meantime is to get him an Elizabethan collar (cone) to wear so he can't continue to scratch it. If he scratches it too hard he could break it open and you will have a major mess in your house!

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
