My dog eats grain-free. Can I switch them back to regular food?

Most pets do not have grain allergies. More commonly it's the protein source that causes allergies. For most dogs, grain free is not recommended. For general food, I recommend the brand Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible and this results in great stool quality, minimal quantity and low odor. I also like Nutro and Purina Pro Plan. If you want to rule out a food allergy, the fastest way is a proper food trial using a hydrolyzed protein diet. I hope this helps.

No. Most dogs handle grains very well. In fact most food allergies are to a protein source such as beef or chicken. If you dog does a food allergy if some kind, it typically shows up with itching and hair loss. A small percentage can have GI symptoms but that is the minority

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unless your dog has a true grain allergy (which is very rare), then there is no problem feeding grains to your dog. If she likes the food, has good poops, and a good hair coat, and is a good weight, then feed it. The most important thing for dogs is to feed a lower fat, higher fibre diet as they get older (about age 7) as at this age they are more prone to gaining weight and diseases such as pancreatitis which are made worse by fatty foods. I agree. I do not recommend to feed pets a grain free diet unless they have a known grain allergy. There are a few brands that I recommend because I think they’re high quality and pets tend to like the taste. Royal Canin is my number one choice. It is highly digestible and low residue and this tends to result in good stool quality with low stool quantity. Another brand I like is Purina pro plan. Nutro is also a good brand. While some dogs can tolerate switching between protein sources well (chicken to lamb, etc.), other dogs can have issues and develop GI upset with the change. Nutritionally there is no need to switch protein sources, and dogs can have an allergy to one protein source versus another. If you do switch, I would recommend a slow transition over a week to see how she handles it

Ideally anytime there is a diet change you want to do it over a week. You gradual mix the two foods and add kore and note if the new food each day until at 7 days you are 100% in the new food. Grain free is not really a problem for dogs... good for you!

Grains are very rarely the cause of any skin issues so switching Kyya to a normal, grain containing diet is recommended. Keep in mind that the link is not understood but as long as the pet is not showing signs of heart disease, changing the diet will help avoid any heart pathology. The brand I like best is Royal Canin.
