Switching grain-free dog to grain food? How to spot grain intolerance?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 1 month old | 17 lbs

My dog has been raised on grain free foods does this mean she will have a harder time if I wanted to introduce grains into her diet? How can you tell if dogs are intolerant to grains, what are the signs or symptoms? Thanks!

No. Most dogs handle grains very well. In fact most food allergies are to a protein source such as beef or chicken. If you dog does a food allergy if some kind, it typically shows up with itching and hair loss. A small percentage can have GI symptoms but that is the minority

Great question! Typically dogs are not allergic to grains; more commonly they are allergic to the protein source (chicken, beef, fish). If there was an allergic reaction, it would probably be to a protein change. Allergies to food manifest as ear infections, skin infections, licking the paws/belly/under the tail, or vomiting and diarrhea. If you would like to change her food, I would recommend transitioning over 7 days (mix 75% old food with 25% new food, then 50/50, then 25% old food and 75% new food, then new food), so her stomach has time to adjust to the change. I usually explain it like this: If you ate cereal for your whole life for every meal, then you ate something rich like Mexican food, your stomach will get upset. If you do the change gradually, Chloe should be ok. Good luck and kisses to Chloe!

Any change in diet can trigger diarrhea, and a food intolerance can be seen to any protein in the diet, including those from meats, grains, egg or dairy. My dog eats grain-free. Can I switch them back to regular food?

Yes I don't see any reason why you can't transition them back. Most pets don't have grain allergy anyway, which research shows us. I would be cautious however if your pet was perhaps allergic or suspected to be allergic to certain proteins though. Chicken, beef and turkey are the most common allergen protein that dogs have so I would make sure to stay with the same protein as the current food you have your pet on. Also make sure to do a gradual food switch over the course of a week to help prevent GI upset.

Can I switch my dog from grain-free Blue Buffalo to regular food?

Most pets do not have grain allergies. More commonly it's the protein source that causes allergies. For most dogs, grain free is not recommended. For general food, I recommend the brand Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible and this results in great stool quality, minimal quantity and low odor. I also like Nutro and Purina Pro Plan. If you want to rule out a food allergy, the fastest way is a proper food trial using a hydrolyzed protein diet. I hope this helps.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unless your dog has a true grain allergy (which is very rare), then there is no problem feeding grains to your dog. If she likes the food, has good poops, and a good hair coat, and is a good weight, then feed it. The most important thing for dogs is to feed a lower fat, higher fibre diet as they get older (about age 7) as at this age they are more prone to gaining weight and diseases such as pancreatitis which are made worse by fatty foods. My dog has a meat allergy. Is his grain-free food safe from DCM?

It's going to be hard to notice symptoms before it's too late - but signs that would be concerning are panting at odd times, decreased exercise capacity, rapid breathing while resting, and coughing. There are prescription diets that are hydrolyzed - which means the food is mechanically or chemically broken up in to such small pieces that the immune system no longer recognizes it as chicken or pork (etc). I would recommending asking your vet if one of those diets would be appropriate. If you can't find another diet that works for Padfoot, it's important to know that the risk of heart disease is low, even though it's higher for grain-free or boutique diets than others, so you have to weigh controlling allergies that cause immediate harm with the possibility of heart disease.

How do I safely add grain to my new puppy's grain-free dog food?

Ideally anytime there is a diet change you want to do it over a week. You gradual mix the two foods and add kore and note if the new food each day until at 7 days you are 100% in the new food. Grain free is not really a problem for dogs... good for you!

One important fact to remember is that grains are very rarely the cause of any allergies in pets. Additionally, grain free diets have been linked to heart disease though it is not fully understood at this time. If Stella does respond, it will be 12-16 weeks before you will know if it helped or not. Additionally, she cannot have any other treats/foods/flavored supplements during this trial period.
