My dog swallowed floss, vomited, but I can't find it. What's next?

Hello. It is difficult to say if & when the floss may pass. In general, things transit the gut of dogs in about 18 hours, but floss can potentially get hung up somewhere. If this just happened, you vet may be able to retrieve the floss with an endoscope. If it has been many hours, I would feed your dog 2 pieces of bread slathered with Vaseline. Feed him a piece at a time. This will bulk up & lubricate any ingesta hopefully moving the floss along. In total, just monitor him over the next 3-5 days for any signs of inappetence, bloating, vomiting or belly pain. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Honey is very cute! If she chewed up the arm in to pieces she will likely be fine. If she swallowed it whole then it could pass in her stool, she could vomit it up on her own or it could becomes stuck and cause a blockage. It is best, if swallowed whole and it just happened, to take her to the Vet right away and have them induce vomiting. We do not recommend hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. Signs of a blockage are vomiting, not eating and lethargy. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh no! I would check his stools to see if they pass. If he can't pass them then the signs would be vomiting, not eating, lethargy. You can also have an X-ray taken to see if they are inside him! I hope this helps!

If she vomits again, has any difficulty pooping (acting constipated) is lethargic, not eating or otherwise acts sick at all, then she needs to go to the vet asap. If she is 100% normal after this, then she may have vomited all the fibers that she ate. Be sure to watch what she is chewing on, puppies get into everything. Good luck, I hope this helps.

I have to agree that I think it will pass in time but one never knows with foreign bodies in each individual patient. I would monitor Jax very closely over the next 2-4 days for nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. If these signs appear and persist I would advise seeing your vet immediately for possible x-rays. You may see no signs at all and that would be the best scenario for this case. One thing I would advise is feeding 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice daily with his regular food. Not pumpkin pie filling, just canned pumpkin. It's loaded with fiber and will keep the gut happy and things moving during the next few days, hopefully helping the staple along and out of the system. Good luck with Jax. Not sure if you will check the bowel movements but that staple might be really hard to find. I hope it passes soon and with no complications.

However, it is important to watch closely for clinical signs consistent with an intestinal obstruction such as vomiting, abdominal pain and decreased appetite.
