My dog swallowed a deer antler. Is it dangerous? What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

My dog swallowed a small piece of a deer antler. He is American Staffordshire Terrier Mix and is 85lbs. He is acting fine, but just is sad his antler is gone.

Depending on the size of the piece ingested, it may cause problems for Wrigley. A small piece may pass on it's own. A larger piece may cause a gastric or intestinal obstruction. If there are sharp edges, it is possible it could cause a perforation.
To be safe, Wrigley should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Abdominal x-rays should be done to locate the position of the antler. If it is still in the stomach, consider endoscopy to remove it safely.
If you choose to monitor him at home, a bulky diet can be fed to both cushion and push the piece through the GI tract. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

Poor Wrigley! Depending on the size of the piece I would be worried about either potential obstruction/choking, or tears/cuts to the GI tract as it passes through if there was a sharp edge. I'd keep out for signs of choking (coughing, gagging, vomiting), or obstruction/tears (vomiting, diarrhea, attempting to do either without success, blood in either, loss of appetite, etc). If he does show signs of illness, or you think the piece is too large for him to pass, seeking vet care right away is best.

I would not recommend antlers as treats if Beau is able to get off chunks of the antler. If it doesn't dissolve in the stomach acid, it could cause pain in the GI tract and even cause painful constipation as it consolidates in the feces. You can continue to offer small amount of foods (maybe half of normal) for the next day or two. If Beau isn't interested in eating his food or seems painful or lethargic, or if the vomiting continues, he should be examined by a vet immediately.

You will need to monitor him closely for the next few days for any signs of a problem. Symptoms of an intestinal obstruction would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, not wanting to eat, and not having bowel movements. If you see any of these signs, you will need to take Jim to the vet right away for an exam and x-rays, since he may need emergency surgery to remove the blockage.

No, it is not safe! The pieces can cause a blockage in the intestinal tact. You might try something harder, such as a Nylabone, if your dog is an overly-enthusiastic chewer. Another possibility is to have the dogs chew only when you are present--so you can monitor the toys frequently for any signs of pieces coming loose.

Is it safe for my puppy to chew and ingest elk antlers for teething?

I personally do not recommend allowing dogs to eat bones or antlers. It can cause perforation of the GI tract and/or obstruction, both of which will require surgery to fix. There are teething toys you can get from a pet store that helps with a puppy's teething, and I would recommend using ones that you can freeze in the freezer before giving it to her. The cold will help with her teething and make her gums feel better, and there's not risk of GI perforation and obstruction. I hope this helps!

My dog ate a Benebone piece. Should I wait to see the vet or go now?

If Stormy swallowed a piece of this non-digestible bone it has the potential to cause an obstruction, either in the stomach or in the GI tract. If this occurs you will notice Stormy not wanting to eat and vomiting and diarrhea. I think it should be safe to wait and see if she exhibits any of these symptoms before taking her to the vet. However, if it would give you some piece of mind you could have her checked out and have done X-rays performed.
